EDWARD M. GATES, OF WATERTOWN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKlNG-BOXES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. Guns, of the city of W'atertown, in the county of J eii'erson and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in the Construction of Blacking-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in improvements in the construction of blacking-boxes to secure the objects of cheapness in their construction and cleanliness in their use. The first of these objects is attained by making the box of wood, and the latter by the employment of a handle to it.
It is Well known that the principal objections to the use of the ordinary circular metallic boxes are, that the hands of those using them are blackened, and that the cover frequently sticks so firmly to the box that it is removed with considerable difficulty.
In order to produce a cheaper box than the ordinary one and to obviate the objections above mentioned, I construct a box of wood with a handle attached, of one piece, and employ the necessary labor-saving machinery in its manufacture.
I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the body of the box; a, the bottom thereof; 0, the cover; and B, the handle. dis the pivot upon which the cover turns or swings. As said before, the box and handle are of one piece of wood.
The operation of the box is so simple that a description of it is scarcely needed. The box is filled with blacking and the cover then swung to its place, so that the box will be ready for storage and sale. In use, the cover is moved to the position shown in the drawing; and it will read ily be seen that the handle prevents the contact of the hands with the box, and that the swinging cover obviates the difliculty of the sticking to the box.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As an article of manufacture, a blacking-box, in which the box and handle are made from one piece of wood, combined with a swinging cover, also of wood, as and for the purposes herein described.
