Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,899, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JESSE S. BATCHELDER, of Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Confectioners and Grocers Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a central vertical longitudinal section of my square can.
This invention has relation to an improved can or box for the use of grocers, confectioners, &c., who are in the habit of displaying their goods for sale. The novelty consists in constructing the can or box with a glass front and with an upright wall or partition, by means of which a narrow chamber is provided for the purpose of holding any article or substance to be exposed to view.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents a square can or box, made of tin, wood, or other suitable material, and provided with a hinged lid, B. 0 represents a plate of. glass, which constitutes the front of said can or box. D represents a vertical partition inserted in the can a short distance from the front, and arranged to slide up and down between guidingfianges, so that it may be taken out and replaced when desirable. A small lid, d, is hinged to the top of the partition, and when closed down it covers the chamber which is left betweensaid partition and glass front. B designates this chamber. It is to be filled with candies, nuts, cakes, or whatever constitutes the contents of the body of the can. They are to remain in the chamber or space, that which is to be sold being taken from the larger apartment. Hence, the can or box will always appear fulland will show to good advantage.
In this way a small quantity of any article or substance may be used to make an extensive display, rendering it unnecessary to keep filling the boxes or cans, according as their contents are sold, in order to prevent the unattractive appearance which would result in the absence of the provisions described, which may be kept in receptacles better adapted for their preservation.
I claim as my invention- 1. The box or can A having the partition D, glass front G, and narrow space B, as and for the purpose described.
2. The sliding partition D, with hinged lid d, applied to the box A having a hinged lid B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
