WATER-GLOSET SEAE GUARD.

ball whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL DIGGLE, a
subject of the King ofGreat Britain and Ireland, and resident of Brixton, county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Appertaining to lVater-Closet-Seat Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in or appertaining to the seats of water-closets and the like in which the seat is provided with means whereby a clean, sanitary and unused surface is presented to each individual user. a V
The surface of seats of closets, especially those of public conveniences, owing to repeated use soon become soiled and areoften the means of distributing germs and spreading disease when used by uncleanly persons. It has therefore been found necessary that some hygienic device should be employed for the protection of health and the isolation or prevention of contagious diseases, and for this purpose pads comprising a series of leaves or layers have been attached to the ordinary seat of a water-closet or the like, and by the removal of the upper layer or sheet an entirely new and unused surface is presented to each individual user.
The attachment of the hygienic pad or the like to the permanent seat of the water-closet is eifected by means of metal or other clips, in such manner that the pad may be quickly attached or removed. In some cases the sheets of paper or the like are provided with suitable tabs which, when the sheets are cut to shape, extend beyond the edges of the sheets, said tabs when the sheets are made up into-pads being folded inward, whereby the removal of the upper or used sheet can be quickly and easily eflteeted by the user.
Up to the present no means have been provided to insure the certainty of action, the prevention of waste or the simplicity of operation, or the contact of the hand with a soiled sheet in cases where the tab is not em ployed, in all cases it being possible to tear off more than one sheet at a time.
The present invention has for its object to overcome these defects in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying sheets of drawings, in which,
Figure l is a plan View of one form of my invention showing one sheet partially 'removed to expose the finger engaging portion of the sheet beneath. Fig. 2 is a view simi- Specification of Letters Patent.

lar to Fig. sheet.
In carrying out the present invention, sheets of paper, medicinally treated or not,
1 showing a modified form of with central openings are arranged together.
But, unlike previous arrangements, such tabs when the sheets are cut to shape do not extend beyond the edges of the sheets, nor
are they arranged to coincide with or to be superimposed one on another, but are so positioned that the tab of one sheet 1s on the opposite side of the transverse center line of the pad to the tab on the next and succeed- 7 ing sheet and folded inward, leaving no side extension, and such an arrangement is shown in Fig.1, which shows the top sheet of a pad partly torn away.
The tab (6 is formed by slitting the sheet along the line b and folding the portion a inward and downward on to the top surface of the sheet along the hne 0, leaving a cutaway portion.
To remove the top sheet it is only neces sary to exert a pull upon the tab at in the direction of the arrow or other indicating mark (Z, or to insert a finger under the edge of said top sheet, lifting the same, whereupon it can be torn away without soiling the hands. The removal of the top sheet now allows of the tab a of the next sheet slightly rising so that it can be grasped and the sheet pulled off in the direction of the mark '0, or a finger can be inserted under the edge 0 of the sheet, raising the same so that it can be pulled off. In some cases, however, the tab (4 may be dispensed with and a portion of each sheet of the same shape and size as the tab a cut away, that is to say, as shown in Fig. 2, the slit 6 being extended along the line 0, cutting away the portion a, said portion a, which in the previous example would be the tab 0;, being shown by hatching, or said cut-away portion ofthe mark c to remove said next sheet It forms a feature with the invention that .not only .isthe resultant pad composed of sanitary hygieniowaterproof sheets 01 paper arrcnged in a fool-proof manner, but a that the sheetsmay be advantageously used foradvertising purposes, such a medium be ing suitable for bringing announcements under the notice of persons who are not at-' tracted in the ordinary way by the usual advertisements. V V
The hygienic pad has the advantage that i it can be produced very cheaply, the cost being exceedingly small and little more thanthe ordinary toilet roll, hence it would be universally adopted; also the detachment of ztheipr'eviously used upper papersheetfis extremely simple, and as quickly re- ,moved as the tearingoflfof a portion from an ordinary perforated toilet roll, consequently persons would have the sense of relief in knowing that when visiting a public convenience they would be occupying a Having now described my invention, what 7 7 Copies of this patent may beebtained {or five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, 1 i Washingtoml).
