Description
N0. 118,632. A I l Patented Aug. 29, 1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
FRANCIS B. MORSE, OF PLANTSVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO H. D. SMITH & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-STEPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,632, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS B. MORSE, 0f Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improveinent in Carriage-Step; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and rep resents, in-
Figure 1, a perspective view of the upper side of the step; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the under side; Fig. 3, a top view; and in Fig. 4, a sec tional view of the pad.
This invention relates to an improvement in carriage-steps made from wrought-iron; the object being to strengthen the step, as well as to construct it with transverse grooves; and the invention consists in dividing the shank at its junction with the step so as to form a rib upon each edge, whereby transverse slots may be formed in the step between the said ribs, and these, if desired, iilled with elastic or iiexible pads.
Heretofore this class of steps has been made with the shank running onto and so as to torni a rib on the under side of the step, and thc step embossed, as in the patent granted to me April 1l., 1871.
In this invention the shank A is formed in the usual manner, in connection with the step B 5 but at its junction with the step the shank is divided, extending and forming a rib, a, near each edge, which strengthens the step against the twisting strain. Upon the upper surface I form more or less transverse ribs d, and through the steps transverse slots C C, the ribs preventing the foot from slipping, while the dirt, which would otherwise accumulate, will pass through the slots; or the step may be covered with an elastic or iiexible pad, by constructing apad, I), as seen in transverse section, Fig. 4, the said pad corresponding to the space between the ribs on the upper surface, and upon its under side a projection, E, corresponding to the slots C in the step. The said projection, being broader at its base than at the pad, is sprung into the slots, and secures the pad, as in Fig. 3; or the pads may be all made in one piece, with projections corresponding to the slots.
I claim as my invention- 1. A carriage-step in which the shank A is united to the step B and divided on the step so as to form the ribs a. a, substantially in the man ner described.
2. A carriage-step constructed with the sha-nk A and having transverse slots, two or more, as
described. i
3. A carriage-step constructed with the shank A and having transverse slots C C, or more, and with ribs d d upon the upper surface between the said slots, as set forth.
4. In a carriage-step constructed with transverse slots C, two or more, a pad, constructed
