VONNO L. GUDGEB, 0F ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
INHALER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1916.
Application filed July 14, 1915. Serial No. 39,848.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VONNO L. GUDGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashevillc, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhalers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference. being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a chloroform or ether inhaler and has for its object to provide a device of this class which is constructed entirely of metal, easily and quickly taken apart for thorough cleaning and sterilization.
A further object of the invention is to provide an inhaler having means for adj usting or regulating the air supply.
A further object of the invention is to provide an inhaler so constructed and arranged as to admit of re-breathing, a Suficient quantity of air being available to prevent carbon dioxid narcosis and cyanosis.
A further object of the invention is to provide an inhaler in which a quick and safe primary anesthesia is obtained, relieving the patient of nervous excitement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a satisfactory state of surgical anesthesia which is easily maintained.
A further objectof the invention is to provide an inhaler which can quickly, easily is compact and strongly constructed.
A further object of the invention is to provide an inhaler which is so constructed that liability of disarranging the gauze during the stage of excitement is eliminated.
A further object of the invention is to provide an inhaler which is extremely simple in construction, cheap and easy to manufacture, and which presents economy in the use of ether or chloroform byhpreventing undue loss from evaporation.
lVith these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction of the inhaler and particularly in the combination between the base and the removable cuff or v chambered member.
The invention also consists 1n certain novel details of construction and comb nations of parts, all of which will be first fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation illustrating the inhaler 1n operative position. Fig. 2 is a vertlcal longitudinal sectional View illustrating the two primary members of the inhaler. F g. 3 1s a bottom plan View of the inhaler. F g. 4 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional View through the center of the inhaler.
Llke numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures, in which 1 indicates the inhaler which comprises the two primary elements, namely the base 2 and the cuff or chambered member 3. l
The base 2 as shown in the accompanying drawings is shaped in plan so as to conform to the contour of a human face, the rim 4 of the same being conoaved upwardly so as to present a smooth convexed and roundedsurface to the face of the patient, while suitable longitudinal and transverse upwardly bowed frame pieces ,5 are secured to the rim of the base 2 to properly and conveniently support the gauze 6 in the manner as shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 5. The base 2 is provided with an extension 7 for convenient manipulation and adjacent to said extension 7 is hinged at 8 the wire yoke 9 bent, shaped and formed to agree with the rim 4: of the base 2, the said yoke 9 being provided on its free end with a spring catch 10 for engagement with the edge of the base 2 in the manner as shown in Fig. 1. and conveniently be handled, and one which Referring now to the cuff or chambered member?) it will be seen that the same is formed in plan to conform to the contour of the base 2, and that the bottom edge 11 of the wall 12 is flanged outwardly and curved so that upon application to the base 2 the flanged edge 11 lies snugly on the gauze 6 to retainthe same in proper position on the base 2, vthe said flanged edge 11 being so shapedas to receive the hinged yoke 9 which looks the parts together in the manner as illustrated in Fig. 5.
Longitudinally of the cufi'or chambered member 3 and at the top thereof is a rail 13 mounting a slide 14 secured to the top or closure 15, which top or closure 15 is provided with an extension16 for ready manipulation thereof, and is also provided with a circular opening 17 and a pivoted cap 18 for closing and opening the opening 17 in the top 15, the opening 17 and its closure 18 being for the application of the anesthetic on the gauze 6, while the top 15 is readily slidable on its rail 13 into extended position shown in Fig. i or into any intermedi ate position so that the quantity of air can be nicely regulated.
Having thus fully described the invention the operation will be entirely apparent to those skilled in the art from the foregoing specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and while it is evident that the inhaler is susceptible to certain changes and alterations in construction, I consider myself clearly entitled to all such modifications as fall within the limit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. An inhaler including a base, a suitable frame-work for conveniently supporting a gauze or the like, said base including a rim, a chambered member having an outwardly flanged bottom edge to conform to the said rim on said base, a fastening member hinged to said base for engagement with the flanged bottom edge of said chambered member for detachably securing the said chambered member and the said base together, a. slidable top or closure mounted on the said chambered member to open and close the same, the said slidable top itself including an opening and a closure therefor.
2. An inhaler including a base, a suitable frame-work for conveniently supporting a. gauze or the like, said base including a rim, a chambered member having an outwardly flanged bottom edge to conform to the said rim on said base, a fastening member hinged to said base for engagement with the flanged bottom edge of said chambered member for detachably securing the said chambered member and the said base together and a slidable top or closure mounted on the said chambered member to open and close the same.
8. An inhaler including a base, a suitable frame-work for conveniently supporting a gauze or the like, said base including a rim, a chambered member having an outwardly flanged bottom edge to conform to the said rim on said base, a fastening member hinged to said base for engagement with the flanged bottom edge of said chambered member for detachably securing the said chambered member and the said base together, said chambered member including means for regulating air passing to the inhaler.
4. An inhaler including a base, a suitable frame-work thereon for conveniently supporting a gauze or the like, said base including a rim shaped to receive the edge portions of the gauze supported on said frame-work, a chambered member adapted to conform to the said rim of the said base and having its bottom edge shaped for engagement with the edge portions of a gauze received in said rim, means for detachably holding said chambered member in close engagement with the edge portions of a gauze or the like in said rim and for detachably securing the said chambered member and the said base together, a slidable top or closure mounted on the said chambered member to open and close the same, the said slidable top itself including an opening and a closure therefor.
An inhaler including a base, a suitable frame-work thereon for conveniently supporting a gauze or the like, said base including a rim shaped to receive the edge portions of the gauze supported on said frame-work, a chambered member adapted to conform to the said rim of the said base and having its bottom ed 'e shaped for engagement with the edge portions of a gauze received in said rim, means for detachably holding said chambered member in close engagement with the edge portions of a gauze or the like in said rim and for detachably securing the said chambered mem her and the said base together, a slidable top or closure mounted on the said chambered member to open and close the same.
6. An inhaler including a base, a suitable frame work thereon for conveniently supporting a gauze or the like, said base including a rim. shaped to receive the edge portions of the gauze supported on said frame-work, a chambered member adapted to conform to the said rim of the said base and having its bottom edge shaped for engagement with the edgeportions of a gauze received in said rim, means for detachably holding said chambered member in close engagement with the edge portions of a gauze or the like in said rim and for detachably securing the said chambered member and the said base together, said chambered member including means for regulating air passing to the inhaler.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VONNO L. GUDGER.
