J. P. WEAVER. DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING TRIAL F RAMES.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 18. 1906.
WM ease:
WASHINGTON a. c THE-NORRIS zu RS JOHN P. IVEAVER, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING TRIAL-FRAMES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 12, 1907.
Application filed May 18,1906. Serial No. 317,562.
To (all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JouN P. WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at T erre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Supporting TriaLFrames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for supporting the weight of the trialframe employed by optometrists in the makin of examinations to determine errors of re action. The trial-frames employed for this purpose are usually heavy, and where the weight of the same is borne by the bridge of the nose of the person whose eyes are being tested such weight causes great annoyance and where such test is prolonged becomes irritating and exhausting to the patient. I Yith the object of obviating this difliculty I have devised an appliance which will support the weight of the trial-frames and. one which is adapted for use with any construction of such trial-frames which are employed for the purposes stated.
l/Vhile I have shown in the accompanying drawing and shall herein describe thc'preferred embodiment of liiYg-IHX'GDtiOD, it will be understood that the same may be departed from without material departure from the construction shown and described, and set forth in the concluding claims.
In the accon'ipanying drawing, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 represents a perspective view thereof with the l'littl-Ilflll'lO shown in dotted lines; Fig. 2, a view of the rear end thereof, and Fig. 3 shows a detail perspective view of the. hook and its support.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
1 2 represent thin metal bands, each of which is provided at one end with an open clamp 3 3, whereby the said bands may slide one upon the other, thus increasing or diminishing their length, as may be required. At the lower end of the rear band 2 there is attached a short horizontal band 4, and at this end there is provided a ring 5, by means of which the device may be applied to the head of the patient. A similar short horizontal band 6 is attached to the lower end of the front vertical band 1. The device is placed upon the head of the atient in vertical line, and the rear short orizontal band grasps the occiput, while the front of the corresponding band'6 rests against the forehead.
Attached to the front vertical band 1, preferably at a point above the horizontal plate 6 on the end thereof, I attach, by means of a set-screw 7, a slotted plate 8, having at its ends a cross-piece 9, on which is swiveled a swinging hook 10, provided with bifurcated ends 11, and which 1s adapted to catch under apart of the frame of the trial-frame and support the same, whereby the nose of the patient is relieved from the Weight of such trialframe. By means of the set-screw 7 and the slot in the plate 8 I am enabled to give'the proper vertical adjustment of the slotted plate 8 to pro erly focus the glasses of the trial-frame wit the eyes of the patient. To facilitate such adjustment, I provide the slotted plate 8 with the projection 12, by which such plate may be readily moved into the desired position.
As will be understood, my device is quickly and easily adjusted and is adapted for use with any construction of trial-frame and will from off the nose of the patient undergoing test.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. In a device for supporting trial-fra1nes, the combination with extensible head-embracing members, of an adjustable member secured thereto and carrying a swinging hook adapted to engage and support the trial frames, substantially as set forth.
2. In a device for supporting trial-frames, the combination of the head-embracing members, of an adjustable member secured thereto and carrying a swinging member adapted to engage and support the trial-frames, and a grasping device attached to the lower end of the rear member, whereby the device may be support the same and will take the weight adjusted upon the head of a patient, as set lower end of said plate for engagement with forth.
3. In a device for supporting trial-frames,
the trial-frame, substantially as set forth.
[0 In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature the combination of head-embracing mem- 5 in presence of two witnesses.
bers, an adjustable plate attached to the lower end of the front member, means for sel curing such plate in its adjusted position, 1
and a swinging hook depending from the i M JOHN P. WEAVER.
