Description

APPLICATION FILED FEB. 7, I916- W. L. BRALEY & H. FAAS.
LIFTER ARM FOR FURROW OPENERS.
. Slum/Mom I Wanna nnrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM L. BRALEY AND HENRY N. FAAS, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE AMERICAN SEEDING MACHINE COMPANY, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
LIFTER-ARM FOR FURROW-OPENERS.
Application filed February 7, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WVILLIAM L. BRALEY and I'IENRY N. FAAS, citizens of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifter-Arms for Furrow-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lifter arms for the furrow openers of seeding machines.
The object of the invention is to provide an arm of the character described Which will be simple and strong in construction,
economical in manufactureand one which may be easily assembled with the parts in connection with which it operates.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of one member of the arm. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. a is a top plan view of the arm, a portion of the rock shaft to which it is connected and the pin to which the lifter rod is connected. Fig. 5 is a side view of the same parts, also showing a portion of the lifter rod. Fig. 6 is a section on the line G6 of Fig. 5.
The arm includes two members 1 and 2 constructed exactly alike. In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is shown the member 1, the main portion 3 of which is constructed of a flat piece of steel and has formed therein near the inner end thereof a diagonally arranged slot at. Projecting at right-angles from the main portion 3 is an integrally formed flange 5 having bolt holes 6; this flange extends forwardly a suitable distance from the inner end of said main portion and serves the purpose of not only clamping the two members of the arm together but also to add strength to the structure. The other member 2, as before stated, is formed exactly like the member 1, the main portion 7 of which has a diagonally arranged slot 8 and the angularly formed flange 9 having openings 10 for the reception of bolts.
In assembling of the arm the members are placed together so that the main body portions of the one member lies along the outer edge of the right-angled flange of the other member as shown in Fig. 6 with the rock shaft 11 extending through the coinciding slots 4 and 8; this rock shaft being the usual Specification of Letters Patent.

shaft, square in cross-section, employed in grain drills for raising and lowering the furrow openers. The openings 6 and 10'are out of registry with each other as shown in Fig. 6 so that when the bolts are tightened there will be a tendency to draw the two members longitudinally in opposite direc tions, as well as laterally together, thereby causing all walls of the slots to firmly impinge the shaft.
Before the members are assembled, the ends of a pivot pin 12 are inserted through the openings 13 in the free ends of the arm members and on this pin is pivoted the upper end of a lifter rod 1d, this rod being the usual one found in the raising and lowering mechanism for the furrow openers of seeding machines.
Having thus described our invention, we claim 1. In a structure of the character described, an arm formed of two members, each member consisting of a main portion, a diagonally arranged slot formed therein and a right-angled flange, and means for clamping said flanges together.
2. In ,a structure of the character described, an arm formed of two members, each member consisting of a main portion having a diagonally arranged slot and a right-angled flange, said slots when the two members are assembled forming a straight sided opening for the reception of a square shaft, and means for drawing the flanged portions of said members toward each other to decrease the size of said opening.
3. In a structure of the character described, an arm formed of two members, each member consisting of a main portion having a diagonally arranged slot and a right-angled flange, said slot when the two members are assembled forming a straight sided opening for the reception of a square shaft, each of said flanges having bolt openings, the openings in the respective flanges being out of registry with each other.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands this 1st day of February 1916.
