Description

[45'] SAMUEL w. BARBER;
Improvement in Hinges.
No.-18f,5 77. Patented Aug. 29,1371.
UNITED STATES SAMUEL W. BARBER, OF HEATH, MASSACHUSETTS:
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,577, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. BARBER, of
Heath, in the county of Franklin and State of l Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the construction and operationofthe same, reference being had to the annexed ldrawing making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l ofthe drawing is a face View of my invention. Fig, 2 is a side view of the same.
This invention has relation to an improved hinge; and the novelty consists in its peculiar construction and arrangement, which is of such a nature that the door to which it is applied may be adjusted to its proper position when it happens to bind at the top or bottom from continued use or unskillful hanging.
Referring tothe accompanying drawing, A represents the metal strip which is secured to the door, and which is formed with an eye at B to fit the hinge-bolt. C designates the sill-plate,
constructed with the lugs d, through. which passes vertically the hinge-bolt d', and with a socket or recess, A, to receive the eye-piece or knuckle B, which turns on the bolt d. The socket into which the knuckle B fits has its vertical dimension greater than that of the knuckle, so as to allow the latter space for adjustment. The hin gebolt does not turn, but is formed with a square enlargement or shoulder, d, on its lower end, ittin g a corresponding eye in its appropriate lug. The upper end of the bolt has a screw-thread cut around it, to which is fitted a nut, D. E indicates a disk or washer placed on the hin ge-bolt between the knuckle B and the shoulder.
If the door binds at the bottom the nut is to be turned down, which causes the door to be raised sufficient to overcome the diiiiculty. If it binds at the top the nut is to be turned upward.
I claim as my invention- The improved hinge, having the door-strip A with knuckle B, sill-piece C with lugs d, and enlarged knuckle-socket A and adjustable bolt d', formed with the shoulder d and provided with the nut D and washer E or its equivalent, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence ot' two witnesses.
Vitnesses: SAMUEL W. BARBER.
HUGH MAXWELL, AMos TEMPLE.
