' ture sustaining qualities.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
lith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it Vbeing understood that l changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 shows in perspective, a truss embodying the present invention; Figs. 2. and 3 are, respectively, longitudinal and transverse sections taken through the front pad; Fig. 4 is a rear elevation showing the front pad detached from the clamping plate.
- In putting the present invention into practice, there is provided a body-engaging carrying member of any desired form, the same in the present instance being delineated in the form of an arcuate, metal spring 1 carrying at one end, a back pad 2, and at the other end, a front pad 3.
The front' pad 3 comprises a supporting 'plate 4, preferably made of metal and roughly approaching an oval contour. Superposed upon the plate 4 is a hollow body 5 which may consist of one vor more layers of rubber, two layers being shown in the present insta-nce. The body 5 is nested within a cushion 6, which may consist of one or more layers of felt, the peripheries of the body and the cushion being in continuous engagement with the supportingV plate 4.
Preferably, the body 5 and the cushion 6 are of semi-oval form, as Figs. 2 and 3 will disclose readily. The resilient portion of .the pad, comprising the body 5 and the cushion 6, in inclosed in a casing 7 which may comprise one or more layers of oiled silk or other moisture-proof material. The edges 8 of the casing 7 are overlapped upon the rear face of the supporting plate 4 and are united by a stitching 26 running both longitudinally and transversely, thereby to tighten the edges 8 of the casing about the periphery of the supporting plate 4. The stitching 26 may properly be referred to as a lacing cord, since it exercises the function of such an element. The invention comprises a clamping plate 9 having an angularly disposed flange 10 which bears against the edges 8 of the casing 7 to bind the same against the supporting plate 4. Secured to the supporting plate 4 is a threaded stud 11, passing through one end of the spring 1, the stud carrying a nut 12 which engages the spring 1.
The construction of the pad 3 Ais such that it may be taken apart readily, and be attached readily to the spring 1 or be detached therefrom witlr equal facility. Owing tothe provision of the resilient bocdy 5 which is nestedwithin the cushion 6, the pad, although affording comfort to the wearer will at the same time be found thoroughly eflicient for retaining thel rupture.
Having thus'described the invention, what is claimed is In a truss pad, a cushion comprising a Y plurality of nested cup-shaped elements made of inelastic yieldable material; a body .shaped element thereby to give lthe pad homogeneity, the cup-shaped elements of thev cushion being individually removable, thereby to yvary the cushioning effect of the pad,
and the cupfshaped elements of the body be#Y ing individually removable thereby to vary In testimony that I claim the foregoing as the resiliency of the pad; a supporting plate my own, I have hereto affixed `my signature Whereon the edges of all of the cup-shaped in the presence of two Witnesses.
elements rest; a covering surrounding the HENRY DANIEL OBRIEN. outermost cup-shaped element of the Cush- Vitnesse:
ion; and means for assembling the covering LEON WV. KATZENSTEIN,
