Description

J. U. ADAMS.
.TRUSS PAD.
APPLICATION FILED SH12, 191s.
1,098,546' Patented June 2, 1914.
sont u. enana, or cincinnati, entre To all whom it mog/ conce/r11.:
Be it known that l, .lohn U. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State oie Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Truss-Pads; and l do declare the following to bp a clear, full, and exact description of the invention, attention being called to the drawing' which accompanies this application and'` forms a part thereof.
This invention concerns truss-pads and relates to `the construction of such pads the same is hereinafter described and claimed and as .illustrated drawing, in which:
Figure l, shows thc back side et the pad, that is the side opposite to the side which comes in contact with the wearer. f2, is a central longitudinal section oit the pad. Fig. 3, shows the padk as viewed in Fig. l, but with the back-plate of same removed. Fig. 1l, shows a vertical cross-section through a member forming the inclosure of the body of the pad. Fig'. 5, in a view similar to Fig. l, illustrates certain modified features. Fig. 6. is a side-elevation of the pad as shown in Fig. 5, and partly in section.
lhe body of the pad is made olf material A, suitable for the purpose and selected according to any particular cushioning ell'ect which maybe desired. This material is contained in a pouch-shaped-covcr of elastic material like rubber which is so formed as to produce the rounded and convex face or conta ct-portion B, meaning thereby that portion which comes in contact with the skin of the user, and the dat andannular back portion o, which borders the open por tion ott' the pouch through which the filling material is introduced.
A properly shaped plate C, is placed upon the lilling,y and held in position by being forced under the annular portion 7), of the pouch. The bak ot' the pad consists of a plate D, similar in shape to plate C, and incased by a. cover E, of a material similar to that of the pouch. rlhis cover extends around the edge oi plate l), and by overlap ping the saine on its undersineas shown at c, is thereby securely held in place.
One or more holes c, to receive one or more screws, are provided in plate (l, and similar holes d, are provided in plate D, which register with holes c.
Screws 8, Yare used to secure .he back to in the accomp anying vand through the back plate below it and Specification et" Letters Patent.

plate C, with the edge` o, of the pouch and the edge e, of cover E superposed and .in contact with each other and clamped between the two plates. The body of the pad is thus completed in aI substantial manner and with the covering; thereof held lirmly in position without the use of stitches, glue or cement. V
The pad is secured to a belt or other means whereby it is held in position, by suitable devices as for instance by a shank 10, which is perforated for the reception of attachingl means.
Screws 8, serve readily .for this purpose, so that one scrcawconnection may be used' to connect lace and back parts of the pad to each other and the complete pad in its entirety to the shank. The connection to this latter may also be one which permits rotary adjustment about the point of connection. to permit change of the angular relation of the pad with reference to the shank as indicated in Fig. 5. For this purpose a circular disk ll, is used and held in place by a cap F, which has a central circular opening, somewllat smaller than the disk. The edge around this opening is shaped to entend over the edge et the disk, as shown at l2, so as to hold the same in place, while permit ting it to rotate. The cap is provided with flanges 13, whereby it is attached to the back of the pad by screws lll, being seated in plate D. Screws 15 engage the shank and are seated in the disk and when said screws are tightened, shank and disk are closely drawn together, clamping` the inturned edge 12 ot the cap between them. The pad is thus rigidly held to the shank.
Having described my invention, l claim as new:
l. A pad consisting et a pouclrshaped cover oil" el ast-icvmaterial, suitable filling inatcrial contained therein, av plate hel d in place on ltop ol the filling material by the overlappingl edge ol the pouch under which said plate is slipped, a back plate similar to the plate lirst i'neutioned, an elastic casing for the saine held in place by its edge which overlaps said back plate on its underside and contacts with the .inturnod edge oi the pouch and a screw passing through this covering,
seated in the plate lirst mentioned whereby the two plates are held to each other and whereby the contacting' edges of the pouch and the covering of the back-plate are held in position hy the Clamping action of said two plates.
Q. A pad consisting of a face-portion and a back-portion, each comprising an elastic Covering and a plate, the edges of the coverings overlapping the edges of the respective plates and contacting' with each other, a shank on which the pad is supported and a screw adapted to Vengage. this shank and the respective plates and seated in the plate ot the face-portion of the pad to hold this l atter to the hwk-portion thereof so as to clamp l 'the contacting edges of the coverings in position and to hold the pad in its entirety to the shank. y A
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
