Description

(No Model.)
.J. SPYER. METHOD OF MAKING DENTAL PLATES.
No. 525,519. Patented Sept. 4, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH SPYER, OF MEXICO, MEXICO.
METHOD OF MAKING DENTAL PLATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent hl'o. 525,519, dated September 4, 1 894. Application filed June 4, 1894:- Serial No. 513,460. (No modelll To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SPYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Mexico, in the district of Mexico, Republic of Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of and Means for Making Dental Suction-Plates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved method of and means for making dental suction plates; the object being to construct a plate which shall have a suction device extending its entire length.
My invention therefore consists in providing the means for making said plate and also the method of making the same,'as other means might be employed for carrying out my method hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a view of aplate constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the form and Fig. 3 shows the method of using the same.
In constructing plates in accordance with my invention I employ a thin metallic form A which is shaped to approximately fit the plate or plastic model, said form being preferably constructed of sheet block tin so that it can be readily pressed to fit the plate or model.
Two parallel slots or openings at aare made in the form A said slots extending from end to end of the form which is essentially U-shaped and it will be noticed that these slots are near the opposite edges of said form. In practice the form is secured to the plaster model B and then a spatula or otherv sharp instrument is inserted in the slots or openings 0. and passed along their entire length thus forming the parallel grooves b b in the plaster model. These grooves are then packed with hard or soft rubber passed also through the slots 0. and the case is then packed in the usual manner with the form remaining on the model and the plate vulcanized and upon completing the plate it will be seen that in addition to the suction caused by the shape of form along the edges of its upper surface are formed the parallel ridges c c which provide a suction device from end to end of said plate but only at the outer edges. By this method and means a very narrow plate can be employed, thus leaving the sense of taste unimpaired. Any suitable metal may be employed in constructing the form but I have found block tin to answer very well as it can be made to conform to the shape of the model.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The method herein described which consists in making a groove or grooves in the plaster model, filling said grooves or groove with rubber, and then vulcanizing the plate upon said model to join the said filling in the grooves, substantially as shown and described.
2. The method herein described which consists in placing a slotted form plate upon the plaster model, making grooves in said model by passing an instrument around in the slots in the form or plate, filling the grooves so made with rubber, packing the case with the form remaining on the model and uniting the plate and rubber filling, substantially as described.
, 3. The form herein described consisting of a thin metallic sheet of the desired shape and" having slots or openings extending from end to end near its edges, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH SPYER.
