To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, Gnoncn DEWEY AT- msson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of Fayette and State of Nest Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain Blacking-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved blacking brush, which may be employed as a dauber when applying liquid polish to shoes, stoves and similar articles, it being of course, understood that the brush may be advantageously used for other purposes when desired.

The principal object to provide a fountain blacking brush of simple construction, which has a valve for controlling the flow of polishing fluid from the reservoir mounted upon the brush head and is further provided with a lever, by means of which the opening or closing action of the fluid controlling valve may be regulated, or maintained in an open or closed position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a brush or dauber of this character, in which the several parts thereof may be easily disassociated for cleaning purposes, me of said parts having a band provided with indicia for indicating the position of the fluid controlling valve.

The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when so desired.

In the drawing :.Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fountain blacking brush constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section showing the fluid controlling valve on the brush head, in closed position. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.

The numeral 1 designates a brush head or body formed of separable sections 2 and '3 formed of wood or any other suitable material. The section 2 is formed upon one side thereof with an extension 4 to which is secured a handle 5, said section 2 being of the invention is further provided with a centrally disposed annular recess 6, rising from the bottom of which is a frusto-conical boss 7, having a constricted fluid passage. the lower portion of which opens out to the bottom of the section 2. A tapering member 8 is provided with a centrally disposed and constricted channel the lower portion of which receives aconical shaped boss and is secured thereto in any suitable manner. The member 8 is preferably formed from cork or similar material and adapted to be inserted within the neck of a bottle or similar receptacle containing a polishing liquid. Secured centrally of the section 2 of the head 1 of the brush is an annular bottle or reservoir support 9 composed of a plurality of spring gripping fingers 10, which are adapted to surround the recess 6 and extends above the 3 same and the member 8 to assist in maintaining the bottle or reservoir supported upon the member 8 in a vertical position. The lower portion of the constricted pas sage in the brush head provides a valve seat 13 below the upper portions of the constricted passages in the members 7 and 8, while the section 3 is centrally provided with an opening 14 registering with the lower portion of the passage i the boss 7, said opening receiving at its lower end a spider 15. Located within the passage 14 is a valve stem 16 passing through an opening in the spider and to one end of which is attached a valve 17 adapted to be positioned against the valve seat 13 in the section 2 and prevent the flow of liquid from the reservoir through the fluid passage formed in the sections 2 and 3 and the member 8.

Secured to the bottom of the section 3 is a plate 18 provided with a pair of depending ears 19, between which is pivoted a valve controlling lever 20 having one end thereof slotted to receive a pin on oneend of the valve stem 15, as indicated at 21. The lever 20 has its bottom edge inclined for a portion of its length as indicated at 22, at the respective ends of which are shoulders 23 and 24. The end of the lever 20 opposite to that connected with the valve stem is adapted to abutagainst a stop 25 formed on the valve when being moved to an opened position.

Pivotally mounted for swinging movement upon the plate 18 is a second lever 25, having one end thereof arranged for sliding movement beneath the inclined bottom edge 22 on the lever 20, said sliding movement being limited by the shoulders 23 and 24 on the lever 20. Fixed to the opposite end of the lever 25 from the end engaged with the beveled face 22 of the lever 20, is a spring finger 26, having an end arranged to bear against the plate 18 on the section 3 of the head of the brush and maintain the lever 25. yieldably engaged therewith.

Disposed beneath the section 3 and adapted to cover the valve controlling mechanism and the operating means therefor and detachably engaged with the section 3 by means of a band 27 is an absorbent pad 28, which is adapted to be saturatedby the polishing fluid within the reservoir when ,the fluid controlling valve is moved: to an opened position by the lever 25.

The angular band 27 is provided upon its circumference in a slot 29 with which the end of the lever 25' carrying the spring finger 26 is adapted to be positioned in order to bewithin convenient reach when it is desired to operate the lever 25 to open and close the fluid controlling valve. The band 27 is provided at opposite ends of the slot with suitable indicia indicating in which direction the lever 25 should be moved to open or close the fluid controlling valve.

lVhen it is desired to use the brush for blacking purposes a bottle of liquid polish is positioned upon the member 8 with the neck of the bottle disposed in the recess 6 and between the spring fingers 9', in which position the fluid contained within the bottle or reservoir may be permitted to flow through the fluid passage in the sections 2 and 3 of the head 1 of the brush by operating the lever, 25, which through its connection with the lever 20. moves the fluid controlling valve to an opened or closed position, and through such movement of the valve the pad 28 becomes saturated with the polishing solution.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will beapparent that a fountain blacking brush construction has been provided which is simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and highly efiicient in use.

Having described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. In a fountain blacking brush, a brush head having a fluid passage therein, means for closing said passage, a plate secured to the under side of the brush headand provided with spaced cars, a lever pivoted be tween said ears and provided with an end connected with said means, a second lever pivoted between its ends to said plate and arovided with an end contacting with the bottom edge of theflrst mentioned lever, and shoulders between the ends of the first mentioned lever adapted to retain the said end of the second mentioned lever in contact with said bottom edge. when the. second mentioned lever is turned about its pivotal connection with the plate.

2. In a fountain blacking brush, a brush head having a fluid passage therein, a valve disposed: within said passage, a plate secured to the under side of the. brush head, a lever connected with said plate and valve and provided with an inclined portion on its lower edge, a second lever pivoted to said plate and having an end adapted to slide on said inclined portion when the second mentioned lever is turned to adjust the valve within the said passage, and a spring finger on the second mentioned lever having an end trictionally contacting with said plate whereby said valve may be held in adjusted position.
