1 Claim.

My invention relates to an improvement in liquid dispensing brushes and refers more particularly to hair brushes, although the device is applicable to such brushes as paint brushes, scrub brushes and the like.

The object of my invention is to provide a brush having space therein for carrying a supply of liquid such as hair tonic, liquid soap, paint, cleaner liquids of various kinds, etc., that may be dispensed into or among the bristles of the brush in desired quantities from time to time as the brush is being used.

A further object is to provide a brush of the Ikind mentioned that is comparatively simple in construction, easy to make, and one that is comparatively inexpensive to make and sell. These and other objects will be more fully described as this description progresses.

Now referring to the accompanying drawings in which similar numerals of reference designate the same parts throughout the several i`ig ures of the drawings; Fig. 1 is a bottom plan view of the brush, part of the bristles being removed for convenience of illustration.

In the drawings is shown a brush device having a hollow brush head i5 that has a brush base l5 in which is inset tufts of bristles Il between which is openings or passages I8 through the brush base Iii and opening into the chamber i9 in the brush head l5.

The brush head l5 is provided with a hollow handle element 20, the rear end of which is provided with a removable closure plug 2| that is threaded thereinto. The other end of the handle 2li is provided with a closure plate 22 that is an integral part of the handle 20, and a segment of an annular ange-like portion 23 and a tongue-like guide element 24 is formed thereon and projecting slightly therebeyond is integrally formed thereon and abuts a like formation on the rear end of the brush head l5 and is permanently and rigidly cemented or welded thereto; this assembly provides a slot-like space 25 in which a valve slide plate 26 is slidably carried.

The valve slide plate consists of the plate 26 tioned slot 2l therein and in which is positioned the said tongue-like element 24 which functions as a guide and retainer for the plate 26 as will later and further be described. The valve plate 25 is provided with a round valve hole 28 that is adapted to move in and out of registry with a substantially V-shaped hole or opening 29 in the end plate 22 of the handle element 20. The slide valve plate 26 is provided with an operating knob 30 that depends therefrom and projects below the handle 2i! and brush base I6 as shown.

Depending from the brush head l5 and extending downwardly therefrom into the chamber I9, and spaced a little in front of the slide valve plate 26 is a plate-like element 3| against which rests a metallic plate 32 that is made of spring material and from which a leaf spring 33 is formed and tensioned to bear against the slide valve plate 26 and hold the plate 26 in position as a closure over the triangular shaped opening 29 in the closure plate 22 of the handle element 22 when the two

28 and 29 are out of registry with each other.

The operation of the device is as follows: the device is prepared for use by rst removing the plug 2l from the handle element 20 and then filling the cavity in the handle element 20 with the desired liquid, hair tonic, liquid soap, water, or the like, and then replace the plug 2|.

Now by pressing on the knob 30, the valve plate 28 may be slipped endways until the valve hole 23 comes either partially or entirely into registry with the V-shaped passage 29, whereupon the liquid in the handle 2U will flow through that portion of the V-shaped passage 29 that is in registry with the valve hole 28, and also through the valve hole 28 into the cavity I9 of the brush head l5 and drain through the brush base passages I8 onto the drain downwardly on the bristles l?, whereupon the user of the brush may brush his or her hair, during which process the liquid will be imparted to the hair as desired. The amount of liquid desired, and the speed with which the liquid may be governed bythe size of the opening 28-29, created by the amount of ther V-shaped passage 29 brought into registry with the valve hole 28.

In Figures ll and l2 is shown a modification of the device and in which is shown the brush head, I5a, brush base 16a, having bristle tufts lla therein, and the perforations or liquid passages i911 therein and between the bristle tufts lla that open into the brush head cavity or chamber I9a the same as described for Figs. l to 8 inclusive. Also Within the chamber 19a is a slide valve plate 26a that is perforated or provided with a multiplicity of valve openings 28a, one for each passage !Ba in the brush base ita and adapted to be moved in and out of registry with the passages 18a as Will later be described. The valve plate 29a lits closely and rests on the brush base ita and is slidable thereon. The valve plate 29a is held in Contact with the brush base 19a by means of a pair of L-shaped guides or retainer elements a and 25D that are positioned, one on opposite sides of the brush head, Ilia and slide valve plate 26a with one leg of each L resting on the slide valve plate 26a and the other leg of each L being rigidly attached, riveted, welded, or cemented, to the adjacent side Wall of the brush head itu. The slide valve plate 29a is provided with an operating arm 29h that is integrally formed on one end thereof and extends upwardly and rearwardly therefrom. The extreme end of the operating arm 29h is turned upwardly and passes through andk is operable in a slot 34 in the brush head 15a. The upturned end of the operating arm 2Gb is provided with a button or knob 89a that ts closely on, and is slidable on the outer face of brush head 55a, and the button 30a covers the entire slot 34 at all times to provide a liquid tight closure for the slot 34.

The brush head 15a is provided with a handle 28a, one end of which is threaded as at 35 into an opening 35 in the rear end of the brush head I5a and opens into the cavity or chamber 19a in the brush head 15a.

This device is prepared foruseby rst unscrewing and removing the handle 29a from the brush head I5a and then lling the chamber 19a with the desired liquid by pouring the liquid through the opening 36 into the chamber [9a. This having been done, the handle 28a may now be replaced in the brush head ld in the same manner it was removed and the device is now ready for use.

To use the device, the botttom 30a may be moved to slip the valve plate 26a tor a position 4 where the openings 29a therein come partially or entirely into registry with the passages 18a in the chamber the bristles Ila and will be imparted therefrom onto the hair of the user of the brush as he or' she brushes his or her hair.

Such modications of my invention may be employed as lie within the, scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and intention of the invention. Now having fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a liquid dispensing brush device of the kind described; said device having in combination, a hollow brush head and a hollow brush handle, one side of the brush head being a brush back and having tufts of bristles rigidly xed therein and projecting therefrom,y said brush back having a plurality of liquid passages therethrough, and positioned intermediate the tufts of bristles, one end of the brush head having an abutment plate formed thereon to receive one end of the said hollow brush handle, said abutment plate having means therein to permit the'passage of a liquid from without the hollow of the brush head to the hollow of the brush head, one end of the hollow handle having a closure plate made as an integral part thereof, the outer face of the closure iplate having a slide valve seat formed therein and having a combination slide valve guide tongue and handle abutment element thereon, said closure plate having a substantially V-shaped opening therethrough, a slide valve plate, said valve plate having a valve opening and an elongated guide slot therein, said valve. plate being longitudinally positioned in the said valve seat and having the said guide tongue positioned through the saidslot, the said valve plate having an integral and centrally located and dependingv operating iinger piece that projects below the handle element, and spring means engageable against the valve plate to hold the valve plate against the valve seat to form a closure for the V-shaped opening, the handle` and guide tongueA being engageably tted against the said brush head abutment plate and permanently afxed thereto, said valve plate being slidable longitudinally to move the valve opening therein into variable degrees of registry with the said V-shaped opening to admit governed amounts of liquid fromV the hollow ofthe handle into the hollowof the brush head for dispensation through the openings in the brush back and onto the tufts or bristles, and means on the outer end of saidhandle 1for closing the hollow of the handle.
