Each stanchion 1 is provided with vertically. arranged pivots 23 at its upper and lower ends which are mounted in pivot bearings in a plateor other elevated device 4 and in a sill or other base support 5; The lower pivot 3 is' provided with a stop 6 which may be of any suitable construction and which coacts with a fixed stop 7 to limit the movement of'the stanchion so that the latter canonly turn through about one fourth of a. circle. which is hinged or pivotally mounted at its lower end as at 9 and is adapted, at its upper end, to close against the head 10. of the stanchion as at 11. The stanchionhead has a shoulder 12 and the bar 8 carries a pivotallyinounted catch 13 which is adapted toengage the shoulder 12 to lock the bar 8 in closed position. Said bar is also provided with a spring 1 1 to snap the catch 13 into engagement with the shoulder 14 when the bar closes. The said catch is provided at its engaging end with a semi-circular arm 15 for a purpose prescntly'described.
