JOSEPH A. BEAMISDERFER, OF SYN ER, ASSIGNOR TO ALBERT \V.WVEIER- BACH, OF I IE-ILMANDALE, AND DAVID E. LONG, OF BELLEGROVE, PENN- SYLVANIA.
ANHVlAL-RELEASING DEVICE.
SFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,208, dated February 4, 1896.
Application filed October 25, 1895. $erial No. 566,812. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH A. BEAMISDER- FER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syner, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal-Releasing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved animal-releaser; and it has for its object the production of a simple device in which the animals secured in their respective places can all be automatically and instantly released by the movement of a lever conveniently placed, thereby permitting the animals to escape or be driven out in case of fire or other like accident.
The invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a portion of a stable, showing my improved device in place and also the means for operating it. Fig. 2 is a plan view of two of the animal-releasers, a portion of the connecting-bar being broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View of my device, the locking-bolt being shown in the locked position. Fig. 4. is a perspective View of the locking-bar.
Referring to the drawings, A is a stall, the trough B of which is secured to the usual transverse supporting-bar G.
D is a base-block, adapted to be secured to bar 0 by screws 1 passed through flanges 2. The projecting central portion 3 of this block is slotted at 4, this slot communicating with the interior hollow portion 5 of the block. Pins 6 project horizontally through the hollow portion 5 fora purpose hereinafter described.
E represents a locking-bar adapted to work through a recess 7 formed in the inner side of block D. This bar is recessed, as at S, to form shoulders 9, which, when the lockingbar is in place, contact with the sides of the block D and limit the movement of the locking-bar. This bar has also a squarenotch 10 in its upper edge between the shoulders 9,
which notch is adapted to register with the.
Gr represents guide-plates, one on either side of the baseblock, these guide-plates being adapted to support and guide the looking-bar.
It is to be understood that any number of these releasing devices can be used, in which the respective locking-bars are to be con nected to each other by connecting-rods 13, so that the operation of one releaser will operate all.
The operation of my invention is as'follows: hen it is desired to put the locking-bolt in position for use, the locking-bar is moved until one of the shoulders 9 contacts with the side of the base-block, in which position the notch 10 registers with the slot at in the baseblock, when the locking-bolt is passed through the slot at and back until the supporting-bar C stops further movement, in which position hook 11 is directly above the locking-bar and in register with notch 10. Now by moving the locking-bar lengthwise its upper edge is caused to enter the hook 11 on the bolt and hold the latter securely in place, the pins 6 in the base-block preventing accidental displacement of the locking-bolt, as will be seen. Now when it is desired to free the animals, which are secured to the rings 12 in the usual manner, all that is necessary is to simply throw the lever 14 in the direction opposite to that in which the locking-bar was moved to lock the bolt in place, which motion of the lever causes the locking-bars to move until the notches 10 therein register with the slots 4 in the base-block, in which position the locking-bolts will be free to be withdrawn. By forming the bottom of the hollow portion 5 of the base-block on an incline, as shown,
the locking bolts when unlocked will be caused to drop free of the base-blocks by gravity, and thus automatically and instantly release all of the animals.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an animal-releasing device, a slotted base-block, a locking-bar working through said block, the movement of the bar being limited, a locking-bolt working in the baseblock, and a hook on the locking-bolt adapted to engage the locking-bar when in locked position, the locking-bar being formed with a notch for permitting the bolt to be withdrawn when the said notch registers with the slot in the base-block.
2. I11 an animal-releasing device, a slotted base-block, a locking-bar having a notch in its edge and provided with shoulders for limiting its movement, and a locking-bolt having a hook on its rear end, said bolt working through the slot in the base-block and being adapted to engage with the locking-bar through movement of the latter in one direction and be disengaged therefrom through movement of the locking-bar in the opposite direction, which latter movement causes the notch in the edge of the locking-bar to register with the slot in the base-block, substantially as described.
3. In an animal-releasing device, a slotted base-block, a locking-bar provided with shoulders for limiting its movement and having a notch formed in its edge between said shoulders, said notch being so positioned that when one of the shoulders contacts with the baseblock to limit the movement of the lockingbar the notch will be in register with the slot in the base-block, and a locking-bolt having a hook 011 its rear end, said bolt working through the slot in the base-block, its hook being adapted on movement of the lockingbar in one direction to be engaged by the edge of said bar and on movement of the bar in the opposite direction to be released, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH A. BEAMISDERFER.
