DOOR-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAGNUS T. HnLonsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Buforchjin the county of \Villiams and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Door-Loclnof which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription.
My invention relates to door locks and has reference more particularly to looks for doors on grain cars. j
an object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and inexpensive lock which will draw the door tightly against the door post when the lock is made to engage the ost. p Another object of the invention is to provide a door lock which will not be affected by the vibration produced by the movement of the car.
I obtain these objects by the mechanism represented in the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and wherein- Figure 1 is an elevationof a car door and post provided with a lock embodying my invention, the door being shown unlocked; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the door locked; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 4: represents a car door to which a base plate or bed 5 1s secured by means of bolts 6 which bolts in turn engage bolt guides 7 so that the bolt guides and plate 5 are all rigidly connected to the door 4. Mounted to slide in the bolt guides 7 is a lock bolt 8. A stud 9 18 provided on the bolt 8 between the bolt guldes 7. Mounted to pivot with one end on the stud 9 is a bell crank lever 10, the other end of the bell crank being provided with a handle 11 whereby the same can be easily moved on the pivot, the bell crank 10 having a stud 12 at its bend engaged by one end of a link 13, the other end of which link is engaged by a stud 14 provided on the rear bolt guide 7.
The bell crank 10 and the link 13 and their pivots form a toggle joint, the axis of which is substantially in alinement with the axes of the studs 9 and 14 when the bolt is closing the door. See Fig. 2. From this figure it will be seen that the tendency of the handle 11 is to further move the lock bolt 8 into the door post 15, which movement is prevented by the shoulder 16 formed on the lock bolt 8 by reducing the width of the forward end of the said bolt and which reduced end engages the forward bolt guide 7. The lock bolt 8 is maintained in unlocked position by the action of gravity on the handle 11 (see Fig. 1), and the further movement of the lock bolt 8 is prevented by the engagement of the bell. crank 10 with the roar bolt guide 7.
To obtain a better drawing action of the lock 8 when closing the door, the forward end thereof is beveled as shown at 17. To prevent the wear of the edge of the recess 18 provided in the door post 15 which comes in contact with the beveled end of the lock bolt, the door post adjacent the said edge is provided with a wear plate 19, the edge of which is adapted to contact with the bolt when the same is moved in the lock. It is self-evident that the wear plate 19 can be made to extend all about the recess 18 provided in the door post 15.
From the above description it will be seen that my handle 1.1 and bell crank 10 form a second class lever having its fulcrum on the lock bolt, and which is linked to the rear bolt guide 7 whereby the movement of the lever is limited. It will be noted that by placing the lever or handle 11 in substantially vertical position, the lock bolt 8 is withdrawn from engagement with the door post 15, and any vibration will have a tendency to move the lock bolt away from the post due to the fact that the lever is in unstable equilibrium on its fulcrum. WVhen the lever or handle 11 is placed in a sub stantially horizontal position, the lock bolt is forced into the door post, and the force of gravity on the lever or handle 11. will further force said look into the door post. Therefore, in both positions of the bolt the tendency of the lever or handle connected thereto is to maintain the same in the position in whichit is placed by actionof gravity on said lever.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantage of the construction of the device shown will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made, as desired, as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I,
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the class described, a bed plate, bolt guides on said plate, a lock bolt slidably mounted in said guides, a bell crank lever pivotally mounted with one end on said bolt between said guides, a link connecting the bend of. said crank lever with one of said guides, and a handle associated with the other end of said crank lever whereby the bolt is operated, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a bed plate, bolt guides at the end of the piate, a lock bolt mounted to slide in said guides, a bell crank lever mounted pivotally with one end on said bolt between the guides, a link connecting the bend of said bell crank lever with the guide positioned bell crank lever being adapted to engage the rear guide when said lock bolt is moved to the unlocking position, thereby limiting its movement in said direction, said handle under the force of gravity being adapted to maintain said means against the front guide and said crank lever against the rear guide when said lock bolt is placed either in unlocking or lockingposition, substantially as described.
