Specification of Letters Patent.

vThe object of the invention resides in the provision of a latch bolt lock which may be applied to various forms of locksand latch bolts now in use and which includes a single .means whereby the device may be secured in unlocked position against accidental movement to locked position, and in locked position so as to prevent the same from being operated to unlocked position except from the inside of the door.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the character named which will be simple in construction, durable, and efficient in use, and which may be manufactured at an exceedingly small cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views; and in which,

Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the door and 11 the latch bolt, which latter the movement of said arm into the recess 12. serving to secure the latch bolt against operation, while the movement thereof out of said recess will permit the free operation of the latch bolt. The outer end of the arm 14 is bent, as at 15, so as to extend transversely of therdoor 10 and lie in spaced relation thereto for a purpose that will presently appear. Extending from the upper end of thelever A on the same side as the arm 14 is another arm 16, the outer end of which is bent so as to be disposed transversely ot the door '10 and in spaced relation thereto ina manner similar to the bent portion 15 of the arm 14. By this construction, it will be apparent that as the lever A is ope'r ated so as to move the arm 13 out of the recess 12, the bent portion 15 of the arm 14 will serve to limit such movement of the lever. Mounted on the inner side of the door 10 is an arm C which is stepped adjacent its free end so as to form a shoulder 18. The free end of this arm C is also provided with a lateral tongue 19 which is bent so as to afford a suitable grip for the manual operation of the arm C.
When the locking lever A is disposed in locking position, as shown in Fig. 1 and when the arm'O is moved to a position sub-' stantially parallel with the vertical edge of the door 10, the lower edge of the bent portion 17 of the arm 16 will engage the shoulder 18 and thereby secure the lever A against movement to unlocked position. However, to move said lever to unlocked position, it is only necessary to swing the arm 0 on its pivot and disengage the shoulder from the bent portion 17 of the arm 16 and then move the upper end of the lever A toward the inner side of the door, this movement being limited by the engagement of the bent portion 15 of the arm 14 with thelower end of thearm C. c When the lever A is in this position, as shown in Fig. 2, the arm 0 is again moved to a position substantially parallel to the vertical edge of the door and the shoulder 18 will lie positioned between the inner face of the bent portion 17 of the arm 16 and the inner side of the door and thus prevent the movement of the locln'ng lever A to locking position as the result of jarring or any accidental causes.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided a single means of exceedingly simple construction for maintaining the locking lever of the latch bolt either 1n locked or unlocked position, this dual function being accomplished without altering the relative relation of the parts of the securing means in either instance.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a door and a latch bolt mounted therein having a transverse recess in one face thereof disposed eX- teriorly of the free end of the door when the bolt is in looking position, a lever pivoted on the free end of the door, one end of said lever being movable into and out of the re-- cess in the latch bolt, and a single means movable into and out of the path of travel of the other end of said lever for holding same against movement when the first named end thereof is disposed in or out of the recess in the latch bolt.
2.- The combination with a door and a latch bolt mounted therein having a transverse recess in one face thereof disposed exteriorly of the free end of the door when the bolt is in looking position, a lever pivoted on the free end of the door, one end of said lever being movable into and out of I the recess in the latch bolt, and the other end thereof bent across the inner side of the door in spaced relation to the latter, and an arm pivotally mounted on the door having its free end stepped and forming a resultant shoulder, said shoulder in the active posi-- tion of the arm engaging one edge of the bent portion of the lever when the latter extends into the recess in the latch bolt to hold same against movement out of said recess Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner oi' ratents,
