MEANS FOR OPERATING AND LOCKING SCUTTLE-COVERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 706,829, dated August 12, 1902.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD F. J OHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Means for Operating and Looking Scuttle Oovers, of which the following is a full'and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved apparatus for opening a scuttlecover and also for closing and locking the same, a further object being to provide an apparatus of this class which may be applied to altransom, skylight, and other device of this 0 ass.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawingsform a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a transversesection of a scuttle provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, asection of the cover of the scuttle on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a section of the frame of the scuttle on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at C6 the framework of a scuttle, to which is hinged at a a cover a said cover being preferably provided with downwardly-directed end and side plates 6%, and in the practice of my invention 1 secure to one end of the scuttle-frame a a plate '1), to which is pivoted at 17 two of the side arms 0 of a toggle-lever 0. One of the side arms 0 of the toggle-lever c is extended, as shown at 0 and connected therewith in the form of construction shown in the drawings is a rod 0 similar to an ordinary transom-operating rod, and this rod is passed through a keeper 0*, and by means thereof the toggle-lever a may be operated, One of the side arms a of the toggle lever c opposite the side arms 0 is projected, as shown at 0 in a direction opposite to that of the projection 0 of one of the side arms 0? and is pivoted to a link d, which is pivoted at d to a plate (1 which is secured to the cover a, and said link cl is provided with a pin (1, which moves in a slot d in the plate (1 I also provide a bare, which is secured to end pieces (2 which are hinged to the cover a at 6 and secured to the opposite ends of the bar c are dogs 6 which are adapted to engage with catches e secured to the corresponding side of the scuttle-frame a, and secured to the cover a at e is a spring e which is adapted to bear on one of the said dogs or on the bar e and to force both of said dogs into engagement with the catches c and connected with one of said dogs at g is a link g which is pivotally connected with an extended member 0 of one of the side arms 0 of the toggle-lever c and also with the link d.

The normal position of the cover a is that shown in" dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in this position the cover is locked by-the dogs 6, which engage with the catches c and whenever it is desired to raise the cover a the rod 0* is pulled downwardly. This operation eX- pands the toggle-lever c and releases the dogs from the catches e and at the same time raises said cover a audit will be understood that the cover a will be held at any desired point of elevation by means of the rod 0 which passes through the keeper c and any desired means may be provided for securing said rod in said keeper, and when the rod 0 is released the cover a will again drop into the closed position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and will be locked in this position.

Instead of the rod 0 a cord or any other device may be connected with the extension 0 of one of said members a of the togglelever c, and other changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificin g its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The herein-described means for opening, closing and looking a scuttle-cover, transom, skylight or similar device, comprising a'toggle-lever, two of the side arms of which are pivoted to the framework and one of which is projected and provided with an operating device, one of the opposite side arms of said toggle-lever being also projected and pivotally connected with a link which is pivoted to a plate secured to the scuttle-cover, transom, or skylight, spring-operated lockingdogs hinged to said cover, transom or skylight, and catches secured in the frame and 5 adapted to be engaged by said dogs, said dogs being also in operative connection with said link, substantially as shown and described.

2. The herein-described means for operat- 1ng a scuttle-cover comprising a toggle-lever :0 two of the side arms of which are pivoted to the framework of the scuttle and one of which is projected and provided with an operating device one of the opposite side arms of said toggle-lever being also projected and pivot- I 5 ally connected with a link which is pivoted to a support secured to said cover and a spring-operated dog hinged to said cover and adapted to engage a catch secured in said framework, said dog being also in connection with said link, substantially as shown and described.
