FOLDING SPRING-MATTRESS FOR DAVENPORT-BEDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1916.
Application filed May 25, 1914. Serial No. 840,660.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HYMAN FREEDMAN and NATHAN M. FREEDMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ofIllinois, have invented. a new and useful Folding Spring- Mattrcss for DavenportBeds, of which the following is a specification.
In constructing a spring mattress for davenport beds it is necessary to design the same so that the spring mattress may be folded so as to be accommodated within the structure of the davenport when it is closed.
The objects of our present invention are to improve and simplify the hinging or folding portion of the structure so that its operation will be more certain, so that it will be more rigid and firm in both open and closed position, and so that it will be economical of manufacture.
\Ve attain the above objects by means of the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is an end elevation of our invention in open or extended position, the end of the davenport with which it is assembled being shown in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is anend elevation showing the structure in partially closed position; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the structure in folded or closed position; Fig. 4 is a plan of the structure in open position, and Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 1, showing the head bracket in open position, in full lines and closed position in dotted lines.
Similar reference characters refer to Similar parts throughout the several views.
The spring mattress comprises two frames which may conveniently be considered as an inner frame, 1, and an outer frame, 2, each consisting of two end rails, 3, 3, and a single side rail, l, extending between opposite ends of the end rails. This construction leaves one side of each frame without a side rail. The end rails are made of angle iron of webs or flanges, disposed at right angles to each other. The side rails may be of angle iron, bars, or pipe as may be preferred. The end rails are disposed with one of the webs or flanges, 5, vertical and the other flange, 6, horizontal and extend ing inwardly or toward the opposite end rail.
The inner and outer frames, 1 and 2, are joined by a hinge consisting of a link made of a plate, 7, of metal of suitable thickness. The upper corners of the plate 7, are ex tended to form ears, 8, the ends, 9, of which are at right angles with the top of the plate, and the lower corners, 10, are rounded. The plates, 7, extend between the ends of the end rails, 3, which are not connected by side rails so that the ears, 8, come adjacent the inner faces of the vertical webs or flanges, 5, of the end rails and the ends of the horizontal webs or flanges 6 of the end rails abut the end edges of plates, 7, just below the ears, 8. In this position the end rails and ears are secured togetherby means of bolts, 11, which permit of a pivotal motion between the respective parts.
The wire mattress is mounted upon the seat of the davenport through the instrumentality of posts, 12, to which the plates, 7, are pivoted, and a pivoted link, 13, extending between the rear portion of the seat structure, and the rear portions of the end rails, 3. of the inner frame, 1. The outer end of the outer frame, 2, is supported by means of legs, 14, pivoted to the end rails near their outer ends, and a link, 15, is pro vided which is pivoted to and extends between the legs, 14:, from a point a short distance below their point of attachment with the end rails and a lug, 7 extending from the plate 7, below the outer ear, 8.
It will now be seen that when the folding operation has been carried to the point shown in Fig. 2, the link, 15, will have caused the folding of the leg, 14, closely adjacent the end rail. At this stage of the folding operation the right angled ends 9 of the ears, 8, will have come into contact with the horizontal flanges, 6, of the end rails and will prevent further relative movement between the end rails of the outer section and the plate, 7. Further closing will cause the plate 7 to pivot upon its connection with the post 12, thereby throwing the inner section of the spring mattress down and forwardly until the position illustrated in Fig. 3 is reached in which the outer and inner sections are held separated from and parallel to each other. The plate, 7, may be extended horizontally slightly below the point, 7*, where it abuts the horizontal flange, 6, of the inner end rail, in which case this extension together with the lug, 7, serves to support a portion of the weight of the end rails and to that extent relieves the bolts, 11, of this load. A suitable continuous wire and spring fabric 16 is secured to the horizontal webs or flanges, 6, of the end rails and the side rails, at.
The head and foot brackets are secured to pieces of angle iron, 17, riveted to the end rails and comprise the U-shaped members 18, shown in F ig. 1 journaled in suitable holes, 19, in the top of the angle pieces 17. One end of the U-shaped member 18 is bent at substantially right angles with the plane of the U and to the end thereof is secured a coil spring 20, the other end of which is connected with the horizontal web or flange 6 of the end rail. By reference to Fig. 5, it will be seen that when the U, 18, is extended the spring will hold the same in extended position, but when the U, 18, is closed the right angled arm of the U shaped member will be carried across the dead center and will therefore hold the U shaped member in closed position so that it will act to maintain the bedding in position.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A folding spring mattress for clavenport beds comprising an inner and an outer section, each consisting of a side rail and two end rails, said end rails having a right angled section, and plates for connecting the end rails of the respective sections, said plates having ears pivotally connected to the inner face of the vertical flanges of adjacent end rails and disposed so that the edge of the plate will abut the ends of the horizontal flanges of the end rails in open position, and said ears having right angled ends which are adapted to engage with the horizontal flanges of the end rails and limit the relative movement of the end rails and plate, and longitudinal projections upon said plate adapted to extend under said end rails in open position and to support a portion of the load thereof.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
