FOLDING SPRING-MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, I'IYMAN FREEDMAN and NATHAN M. FREEDMAN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Folding SpringMattress, of which the following 15 a specification. 7
Our present invention has special reference to spring mattresses adapted to be installed in davenport beds which must be capable of folding within the seat portion of the davenport when the same isclosed to form a davenport.
The special objects of our present invention are the provision of a structure which will be simple and economical of manufao ture; which will be simple and positive in operation, which will afford space between the sections of the mattress for the stowage of the bedding in folded position; and which will be firm and rigid in open position so as to be capable of giving satisfaction in any service to which beds may be put.
\Ve attain the above objects by means of the structure illustrated in-the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is an end elevation of a davenport bed with our spring mattress in open position and assembled therewith, the arm of the davenport being broken away to show the end of the mattress structure;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the spring mattress structure the folding operation having been commenced;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 in which the closing operation is more advanced than is illustrated in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail of the hinging link or platefrom the side opposite to that shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3;
Fig. 5 is a top plan of the structure shown in'Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a plan of the spring mattress in open position.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The mattress structure comprises two frames hinged together and stretched between the members constituting the frames is a suitable spring and wire fabric. Each frame comprises a single side rail 1, between the ends of which extend end rails 2, 2. The end rails are preferably made of L section ,angle iron, with. one flange or web, 2, thereof, disposed horizontally and extending upon the inside of the frame, and the other flange or web 2 extending vertically.
A standard, 3, is secured to either end of the side of. the seat structure of the davenport and to the tops of the standards, 3, by means of the pintle 3 are pivotally secured the inner ends of the end rails, 2, 2, of what maybe regarded as the outer frame of the springmattress, the horizontal flanges or webs, 2*, thereof being cut away at the ends to permit the standards to come upon the inner surfaces of the vertical flanges or webs, 2, thereof. To the outer face of each vertical flange orweb, 2 ,-just in front of its pivotal connection with the standard, 3, is pivotally secured a hinge plate, 4, by means of a pintle P, which hinge plate is sufliciently long to extend beyond the connection between the end rail and the standard. The hinge plate 4 is sufficiently deep to extend below the end rails, and to the inner end in line with its connection with the end rail of the front frame it is pivotally secured by a pintle 4 to the end rail, 2, of the inner or rear frame of the spring mattress. A stop, 5, is provided in the upper;
part of each hinge plate 4: to contact with the end rail of the outer frame whenthe outer frame has been swung to fullyopen position, and a headed pin 6 is provided uponthe inner face of the inner. end of each hinge plate under the head of which the vertical web 2 of the end rail of theinner frame extends when it has been swung into upward or fully open position. This headed pin 6 besides limiting the relative movement between the hinge plate and the inner end rail cooperates with the pivotal connection between the hinge plate and the inner end rail to resist the pull of the wire and spring fabric secured to the horizontal flange or web 2 thereof.
It will now be seen, especially in connection with Figs. 1, 2 and 3, that as the outer section is swung up and rearwardly around its pivotal connections with the standards, 3, the forward edge of the inner section of the mattress frame will be. swung downwardly and forwardly throughits pivotal connection with the. rear of the hinge plate 4.
, To positively secure a corresponding movement of the-rearof the inner section of the mattress frameand to maintain the inner portion of the inner'framerigidly horizontal in fully open position, we provide a toggle comprising the links 7 and S pivoted together at one end, the other ends of which are. respectively pivoted at 10 and 11 to the seat structure of the davenport and the rear end of the end rail of the inner section. Running from the pivotal connection between the links, 7 and 8, to a suitable point in the hinge plate, 4, to impart the necessary movement is a link 12, which will positively cause the lowering or elevation of the rear part of the rear section of the mattress frame by causing the links 7 and V8 to aline with each other or to fold or assume an angular relation to one another.
For the purpose of supporting the outer edge or portion of the outer section of the mattress frame in fully open position, we pivot to the forward ends of the end rails 2, legs 13 and to the legs 13, just below their pivotal connection with the end rails is pivoted a link 14 the other end of which is pivoted to the depending forward end of the hinge plate, 4, just below its point of connection with the end rail. This construction, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, will cause the opening of the leg when the outer section of the mattress frame is unfolded and will cause the leg to be swung or folded close. to the end rail when the mattress is folded.
Any spring fabric may be stretched between the rails constituting the mattress frame. We have illustrated in the drawings such a fabric made of conne'cting wire links, 15, so as to form a square mesh which mesh is secured at suitable intervals to the mat tress frame by-helice's 16. 7
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters' Patent, is
1. A folding spring mattress for davenport beds comprising standards adapted to be mounted upon the seat structure of a davenp'ort, a mattress frame comprising two sections each consisting of two end rails and a side rail, pivotal connections between the free ends of the end rails of one of said sections and said standards, hinge plates pivotally secured to the end rails'of said last mentioned section mediate its ends, pivotal connections between the end rails of the other of said mattress sections and the opposite ends of said hinge plates.
2, A folding spring mattress for davenport beds comprising standards adapted to be mounted upon the seat structure of a dav'enp'ort, afiiiattress' frame com rising two sections each consisting of two fabric carryin'g end rails and a side rail, pivotal connections between the free ends of the. end rails of one of said sections and said standard hinge plates pivotally secured to the end ifails of s id last menti ned sciati a mediate its ends, pivotal-"connections between the end rails of the other of said mattress sections and the opposite ends of said hinge plates, and means for resisting the pull of the fabric carried by said hinge plate adapted to be engaged by the forward ends of the frame forming said other section when said mattress frame is in fully open position.
3. A folding spring mattress for davenport beds comprising standards adapted to be mounted upon the seat structure of a davenport, a mattress frame comprising two sections each consisting of two fabric carrying end rails and a side rail, the terminals of the end rails of one section'being rounded; pivotal connections between the free ends of the end rails of one of said sections and said standards, hinge plates pivotally secured to the end rails of said last mentioned section mediate its ends, pivotal connections between the end rails of the other of said mattress sections and the. opposite'ends of said hinge plates, and headed pins carried by said, hinge plate the head of which engages over the rounded forward ends of the frame forming said othersection.
4. In a folding bed bottom, an inner bed bottom section, an outer bed bottom section, a link pivoted to one of said sections and also pivoted to the other of said sections, the axes of the link pivots being spaced apart, a support on which said outer section is pivotally supported at its side adjacent said inner section, a toggle comprising pivotally connected limbs, one of which has a supporting pivot in lifted relation to said sup- 100 port and the other limb being pivotally and supportingly connected to said inner section remote from said outer section, and a link pivotally connected at one end to the first mentioned link, the other end of said last 105 mentioned link being connected to the medial part of said toggle, in'such manner that the swinging movement of the first mentioned link moves the limbs of the toggle relatively to each other in folding and un- 110 folding the bed bottom.
5. A convertible seating device comprising a rigid. support member of unitary character and a foldable sectional bed bottom carried thereby adapted tohold the bedding in place 115 thereon when folded, said support member having a rigid upright member or standard on its front part and said bed bottom having a border frame including a pair of mattress supporting rails and a connecting 120 hinge member therefor adapted to permit of foldingthesections in one direction, and lifting means arranged to act between the back part of said support member and the adjacentpart of the bed bottom, the upper 12a or outer of said rails being pivoted at its hinge end to said standard, said hinge memher being pivoted to said outer rail near but spaced forwardly from the stationary ivot on said standard, and the lower or iniierof "I said rails being swingingly supported near its ends by said hinge member and said lifting means respectively, said hinge member having operative connection with said lifting means for coaction in raising and lOW- ering said inner rail, as said outer rail is swung forward and backward respectively in unfolding and folding said bed bottom.
6. A convertible seating device comprising a support and a foldable sectional bed bottom carried thereby, said support having a standard adjacent to one edge and rigid therewith, and lifting means spaced from said standard and connected at opposite ends to said support and said bed bottom respectively for raising and lowering one of the sections thereof, said bed bottom comprising an outer section turnably connected to said standard adjacent to its inner edge, a connecting section pivoted at one edge to said outer section at a point spaced from said standard, and an inner section pivoted to said connecting section and supported in part thereby, and a link having its ends operatively connected to said lifting means and to said connecting section respectively for actuation of the former by the movement of the latter.
