HOOK-RULE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1916.
Application filed .Tune 9, 1915. Serial No. 33,062.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SCHOENE- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mankato, in the county of Blue Earth and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hook-Rules, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to measuring instruments and has particular reference to a slide provided with means for adjustably receiving and holding rule blades of diflerent thicknesses and widths, the entire device being adapted for use as a hook rule, square, depth gage, Vernier caliper, etc, while not necessarily restricted to such use.
An important object of the invention is to provide means of the above mentioned character, which are simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and convenient in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side elevation of apparatus embodying my invention, the rule blade being broken away at its ends, and, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a slide, provided with a transverse opening 6, adapted to receive therein a rule blade 7, having a suitable scale or graduations 8. The slide 5 is also provided with a longitudinal opening or bore 9, communieating at one side with the transverse opening 6, as shown. Mounted wit the longitudinal opening 9 is a clamp-hook 10, provided at its free end with a head 11, to contact with one edge of the rule blade 7. Rigidly connected with the opposite end of the clamp-hook 10 and preferably formed integral therewith is a cylindrical screwthreaded shank 11', longitudinally adjustably mounted through a smooth portion 12 of the opening 9, but of course having no screw-threaded engagement therewith. Having screw-threaded engagement with the outer end of the shank 11 is an adjusting ring or nut 13, as shown. One side of the slide 5 is provided opposite the transverse opening 6, with a screw-threaded apertured boss 14., receiving a clamping bolt or screw 15, carrying a head 16. The function of this clamping bolt is to provide means for holding gagement with the clamp-hook 10, when this blade is too thin, the slide being adapted for use in connection with blades of different thickness and Widths.
In the use of the apparatus, the blade 7 is inserted through the opening 6 and arranged within the opening 9, the clamping element 15 being screwed up, depending upon the thickness of the blade, to hold the same in slidable contact with the hook 10. This rule blade may now be longitudinally adjusted, which adjustment is ascertained by the scale 7 and the slide, and clamped in adjustment by screwing up the nut 13 which effects a longitudinal movement of the hook 10, the end 11 of this hook moving inwardly and carrying the blade 7 with it, whereby its edge clamps with the end wall of the transverse opening 6, as is obvious.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
In apparatus of the character described, a slide provided with a transverse opening and a longitudinal opening communicating with the transverse opening, a clamp-hook arranged within the longitudinal opening and having a screw-threaded shank extending exteriorly of the slide, a nut havin screw-threaded engagement with the shank and contacting with one end of the slide, a rule blade adapted for insertion within the the scale-blade 7 in slidable entransverse opening of the slide to be arranged Within the clamp hook, and a. clamping bolt having screw-threaded engagement With e Sl dja eside 9 the a 5 verse openin to' contact with the rule blade for holding it in Contact With the clamping hook, substantially as described.
Copies of this patent In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
