To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SWINBURNE, a citizen lof the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of `Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Transfer Caliper-Arms, of which the fol lowino'isa s eciioatioii.

A further object is the provision of caliper arms, suoli as mentioned, which can be quickly and easily adjusted for operation` and in which at least one of the arms can be easily and quickly taken from the blade and again replaced in the exact position on the blade.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of caliper arms fixed on a broken off blade or scale, and
Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged sections taken on lines 2 2 and 3 3 respectively of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, I have illustrated a blade or scale 5 such as is used in combination square sets now on the market. It will be apparent that any kind of scale or blade may be used proriding it has a means for attaching the cali` per points to it. In the form shown, the blade 5 has a longitudinal groove 6 extending through cue side thereof. The longitudinal edges of the blade 5 are parallel and have graduations 7 thereon.
In the illustration, I have shown caliper arms adapted for outside measurement, but it will be apparent that the shape of the arms or the purpose for which they are to be used, may be varied as desired. I preferably provide a base portion 8 which has a groove 9 extending into it of a suitable depth and width to accommodate the blade 5. In the head or base 8 I provide a locking member made up of a rod 10 having a projection 11 on its inner end adapted to engage the slot 6. I preferably make the member 10 round Speciication of`Letters Patent.

in cross section and provide pins 12 which are adapted to engage slots 13 and prevent the member 10 from rotation in the' member 8. This simply shows one means of preventing the member 10 from rotation in the head S and any other desirable means may be employed. The member 10 is provided with a thumb nut 10 so that it can be locked or unlocked quickly and easily. A spring 10 may be embedded in the nut 10 when desired for facilitating the adjustment of the projection 11 in the slot 6.
The head 8 is provided with a shoulder 14 which is adapted to engage one end of the blade 5. With the provision of the shoulder 14, the head Smay be removed from and replaced oii the blade 5 always in the same position. This will be useful in Work in which the part to be measured is thinner than the part over which the caliper must be placed to take such measurement.
The arm 15 may be secured to or formed integrally with the head 8, as desired, and also may be formed in any desirable size or shape. I have indicated the blade 5 as being thinner than the head 8, but it may be made in any thickness desired.
On the opposite side of the blade 5 Iprovide a head 16 which is provided with a groove similar to groove 9 for receiving the blade 5. It is also provided with a locking member 10 and locking nut 10, similar to the loc-king member of head 8. Also a spring 10 may be provided, if desired.
On the head 16 I provide an arm 17 which is adapted to coperate with the arm 15 in the use of the instrument. The arms 15 and 17 are preferably arranged so that their outer ends or points 18 will come together when the edge 19 of the head 16 will be at the zero point or end of the blade 5 and against the shoulder 14 of the head 8. With this arrangement, as the head 16 is moved along the blade 5 the graduations 7 adjacent the head 16 will indicate the distance the points 18 are separated. This is a convenient arrangement and any other arrangement may be provided, as desired.
A block 20 is provided with a slot similar to slot 9 to engage one edge of the blade 5. Said block is also provided with a locking member 10, 10 and 10, similar to the locking member of head 8. The block 20 is also provided with a suitable mounting for a thumb nut 21. This mounting may be two arms 22 between which the nut 21 is mounted. A screw 23 is extended between the heads 16 and Q0 and engaged by the nut 21 so that upon rotation of the nut 21 the head 16 may be moved along on the blade 5. This, of course, can take place when the head 20 is locked tightly to the blade 5 and the head 1G mounted suiiiciently loose to permit it to slide along on the blade. A spring 2li may be provided between the heads 1G and 20 to prevent back-lash or any Wear that might be in the instrument. It also facilitates moving the head 16 in one direction.

In combination, a scale having a longitudinal groove therein; a caliper arm having a shoulder thereon and a portion disposed at a right angle to said shoulder; means mounted in said portion and engaging said groove clamping said portion against one longitudinal edge of the scale with said shoulder engaging the end of said scale; and a caliper arm niovably mounted on said scale.
2. In combination, a scale having a lon gitudinal groove therein; a caliper arm having a shoulder thereon and a portion disposed at a right angle to said shoulder, there being a perforation in said portion; a rod mounted in said perforation and disposed transversely of the scale with a portion engaging said groove; a nut threaded on said rod and adapted to hold said portion of the caliper arm against one longitudinal edge of the scale with said shoulder engaging the end oi the scale; and a caliper arm adjustably mounted on the scale.
3. In combination, a scale having a longitudinal groove therein; a caliper arm substantially semi-circular in form With a shoulder at one end and a portion disposed at a right angle to said shoulder; clamping means mounted in said portion of the caliper arm and engaging said groove holding said portion of the caliper arm tightly against one longitudinal edge of the scale With said shoulder against the end of said scale; and a caliper arm movablymounted' on said scale and having an end portion curved and extending toward one end of the first-mentioned caliper arm.

In combination, av scale having a longitudinal groove therein; av caliper `arm substantially semi-circular in form with aA shoulder at one end and a portion disposed at a right angle to said shoulder; clamping means mounted in said portion of the caliperv arm and engaging said groove holding said portion of the caliper'arm tightly against one longitudinal edge of rthe scale with said shoulder against the end of said scale; a caliper arm movably mounted on said scale and having an end portion curved and extending toWard one end of the first-mentioned caliper arm; a block movably mounted on said scale; a compression spring engaging said blockand the second-mentioned caliper arm; a screw attachedv to the lastmentioned caliper arm and extending through said spring; and a nut threaded on said rod and engaging said block.
