HOLDER FOR ELASTIC AND SIMILAR GOODS.
Application led November 20, 1915.
To all whom t may concern.'
Beit known that LEDWIN INI. GroLDsMITH,`
a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Holders for Elastic and Similar Goods, of which the fol-l lowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a holder for containing and exhibiting silk, elastic, tape, embroidery, lace, trimming, edging, and similar goods.
The same comprises a container, a card within the same, and a flap cut out from the wall of the container and so located on the container and so arranged relatively to the card, that the elastic, or other goods, while wound upon the card, will have a locking engagement with the flap and be exposed to view, the engagement also being such and the construction of the container such that when the latter is opened, the card may be withdrawn and the elastic automatically disengaged from the flap in the process of withdrawal of the card.
A structure embodying my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the holder with the front end open. Fig. 2. is a central section through Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the card detached from the container.
The container is a box preferably of an oblong but nearly square form and of a depth shallow relatively to its length and width. One end of the box must be capable of being opened, and for this purpose I show the bottom a of the box provided at the front end thereof with a double-fold flange b, and ianges d, CZ, on the front ends of the narrow sides c, c, the flanges b, d, d, coperating to form an end closure. This construction is one well known in the art. The rear end of the box, if desired, may be provided with a similar closure e; but if the end closure e is provided there should be printed on the exposed fold of the flange Z) To remove contents, open this end -or words of similar import. The top f of the folder is cut or slit along the lines y, z to form a flap g, the flap being preferably Specification of Letters Patent.

located relatively near the rear end of the box, the hinge of the iap being located toward the rear and the free edge of the flap located toward the front.
The elastic or other similar goods fw is wrapped spirally around a card h, opposite ends of the elastic being preferably secured to the card. A partof one section of the elastic near the rear of the card extends out through slot m, across the face of the flap g and in through slit y. By this arrangement, although the elastic is supported wholly by the card, the card, and also the elastic, are locked to the container by the engagement of the elastic with the flap g, and at the same time a small length of elastic is exposed to View in order that the purchaser may be apprised of the contents of the box.
When it is desired to remove the elastic from the container, the front end closure is opened and the card withdrawn. The withdrawal of the card being in a direction away from the hinged edge of the flap g, the latter offers no resistance to the removal of the card, the elastic slipping freely olf its free edge.
While boxes have been cut away to expose goods contained in the box, and while boxes have been provided with flaps on which the goods have been wound, and while goods contained inboxes have been passed through slits in the box so as to expose a part of the same to view, ythey do not accomplish the object of my invention, which is to support the goods on a card independent of the container, which goods, while exposed to view, are locked to the container only when the container is closed, but which, when the container is opened, may be automatically unlocked from the container and instantly removed therefrom by simply withdrawing the card.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is- A holder for elastic and similar goods comprising a box of a depth shallow relatively to its length and width, the front end of the box having a removable closure and the top of the box being cut away to form a flap hinged at its rear edge and free along opposite ends and its front edge, and a card within the container upon which the goods are Wound and adapted to support the goods independently of the container, a section: of the goods on the face of the card adapted to extend over the flap from end to end, thereby, When the container is closed, looking the goods to the box and exposing a relatively small partthereof to vievv While permitting the goods to automatically detach themselves from the flap When the card is Withdrawn.
In testimony of whichl invention, I have hereunto set my hand, at Philadelphia, on this 18th day of November, 1915.
