HEAD-REST.

To all 10 ham it may concern Be it known that I, ELIAS G. DAYEH, a citizen of Syria, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, efficient sanitary head rest for public chairs, such as those used by barbers, dentists and the like. The head rest has a pad covered with a paper sheeting that can be easily renewed by a simple operation for the head of each new occupant of the chair. There is means, also, for holding the paper, so that it cannot move in either direction, while the head is resting thereon. These objects will appear by reference to the drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the head rest; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of an arm for holding the head rest to the chair; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the head rest, showing the arm that holds the same to the chair, in section; Fig. 1 is an enlarged perspective view, showing a member employed; Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the head rest, showing the paper receptacle and immediate parts removed; Fig. 6 is a perspective View, showing a detail of a shaft employed; Fig. 7 is a perspective detail view of a spring used.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the pad -1- of the head rest is upholstered with any suitable material such as curled hair or similar filling. Said pad -1- is secured to the block 2, which is reduced at 3 to form a shoulder 4, whereby to mount the flat springs 5, that are held in position by the screws 6. The free ends of the springs 5 bearagainst the upper curved portions 7 of the wire member 8. The ends of the wire member 8 are bent at right angles, as at 9, to the adjacent portions, so that said ends 9 may normally lie in the apertures 10-10 formed in the shaft 11 whose outer ends are reduced at 12-12 and have bearings in the frame 13 secured to the side ends of the block 2 by the screws 14-H. The shaft 11 is housed in a recess 15 in the block 2 andhas also the apertures 16-16 formed therein for the reception of the ends Specification of Letters Patent.

17-17 of the rods 18-18. The ends 17 of the rods 18 are bent at right angles to the adjacent portions of said rods. The opposite ends of the rods 18 are threaded or otherwise secured to the shaft 19 which is held at either end in the elongated bearings 20-20 of the frame 13. The bearings 20 of the frame 13 are elongated, whereby to give the shaft 19 a certain longitudinal movement. To the ends of the shaft 19, which project beyond the bearings 20, there is fastened by the screws 21, the ends of a spring 22 whose middle portion, as at 23-23, bears against the cross member 24L of the frame 13, whereby to hold the shaft 19 normally against the beads or detents 25-25 formed in the cross member 24 of the frame 13, or in the upper ends of the bearings 20.

The cylindrical receptacle 26 adapted for the reception of the roll of paper 27 is hinged to the block 2 by the members 28-28, mounted to the plates 29-29, secured by the screws 30 to the portion 31 of the block 2. The receptacle 26 is held closed normally by the spring 32, fastened at 33 to the portion 31 of the block 2. The opposite end of the spring 32 is detachably held in the pocket 34 mounted on the cylindrical receptable 26. The portion 31 of the block 2 has suitable recesses, which are open at their free ends for the straight parts 35 of the member 8. Likewise, the portion 31 has the recesses 36-36 for the reception of the rods 18.

The head rest is assembled to the chair by an arm 37, having a plate 38, secured to the portion 31 of the block 2 by the screws 39.

The plate 38, when assembled, partially covers the spring 32 and has an opening 10 for straddling a further portion of said spring 32.

Assuming that the head rest is assembled to a suitable chair, the operation of the sanitary feature is effected by manually pushing back upon its hinges 28 and against the tension of the spring 32, the paper receptacle 26 to thereby dispose therein a roll of sanitary paper 27. The end of the paper is led out of the narrow opening, at 11, which is left when the receptacle 26 is closed, and passed over the pad -1- and between the shaft 19 and the adjacent surface of the cross member 2 1 of the frame 13. The end of the paper will hang loosely from the last named position. As thus arranged, the

paper 27 will be held tight against any movement in one direction by the normalpressure of the bar 42 of the member 8 against the paper and the adjacent surface of the receptacle 26, near the opening 41. thereof and will also be held tight against any movement in the opposite direction by the normal pressure of the shaft 19 against the paper 27 and the beads 25 of the cross member 2a of the frame 13. After the exposed surface of the paper 27 has become soiled, the same may be renewed, whereby to present a fresh, clean surface for resting the head of another occupant of the chair by grasping the free end of the paper 27 and simultaneously turning the shaft 11 by means of the finger nut d3 or the stud 44, rigidly mounted to the shaft 11. 10 and 16 out from under the ends 9 of the member 8 and the ends 17 of the rods 18, respectively, whereby the bar 42 of the member 8 and the shaft 19 will be drawn toward each other and away from the respective surfaces against which they press, so as to release the paper. After the paper 27 has been drawn along sufiiciently far for a new portion thereof to cover the padthe operator will turn again the shaft 11 back to its original position, whereupon the springs 5 and the spring 22 will force respectively the bar 42 of the member 8 and the shaft 19 against the surface of the receptacle 26 and the beads 25 of the cross'member 24: of the frame 13, whereby to engage and hold the paper 27 in position upon the pad 1. The rear edge of the cross member 2% of the frame 13 is bent up slightly at 15 along its entire length in order not to engage the paper 27, as the same passes thereunder.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a head rest, means for holding, a paper thereon, whereby the same will not move in either direction and means for re-' leasing said holding means.

2. In .a head rest, a pad, means for holding a paper over said pad, whereby the paper will not move in either direction and means for releasing said holding means.

3. In a head rest, a pad supported upon a frame, a roll of paper, means for holding Said paper in given position upon said pad and means for releasing said holding means.

4. In a head rest of the character described, a block, a frame secured to said block, a pad mounted upon said block, a roll of paper, means for holding given portions of said paper upon said pad and means for releasing said holding means.

5. In a head rest, a pad, a frame for supporting said pad, a receptacle for-holding paper, means for disposing said paper over said pad, whereby said paper will be held stationary thereon and means for releasing said holding means.

6. In a head rest, the combination of a block, a pad supported upon said block, a frame secured to said block, a receptacle for holding a roll of paper mounted to said block, means for drawing said paper over said pad, spring means for holding said paper upon said pad, and a shaft having apertures for releasing said spring means.

7. In a head rest, the combination of a pad, a frame for supporting said pad, a receptacle for holding paper, a wire memher for holding said paper at one end of said pad, a shaft for holding said paper at the other end of said pad, and means for releasing said wire member and shaft from engagement with said paper.

8. Ina head rest for chairs, the combination of a pad, a frame for supporting said pad, a cylindrical receptacle attached to said frame, means for yieldingly holding said receptacle against said frame, whereby a roll of paper may be inserted therein, a wire member for holding said paper at one end of said pad, a shaft for holding said paper at the other end of said pad, and means for releasing said wire member and said shaft, whereby said paper may be moved along said pad.

9. In a head rest, the combination of a pad, a block for mounting said pad, a cylindrical receptacle attached to said block, and yielding means for holding said receptacle in closed position against said block, whereby to retain a roll of paper.

10. In a head rest, the combination of a pad secured upon a block, a cylindrical receptacle adapted to contain a roll of paper attached to said block, a wire member for holding said paper at one end of said pad, a shaft for holding said paper at the other end of said pad, and a shaft having apertures for withdrawing said wire member and said shaft from engagement with said paper, whereby said paper may be moved along the surface of said pad.

11. In a head rest, the combination of a pad secured to a block, a cylindrical receptacle adapted to contain a roll of paper attached to said block, a frame secured to said block, a wire member adapted to bear against the surface of the receptacle, wheresaid paper at one end of said pad, a frame attached to said block, elongated apertures in said frame for the mounting of a shaft, whereby to hold said paper at the other end of said pad, a spring for holding said shaft normally in contact with said paper, and means for Withdrawing said shaft from contact With said paper, whereby said paper may be moved alongsaid pad.

13. In a head rest, the combination of a pad, a frame for supporting said pad, a receptacle for holding paper, means for holding said paper at one end of said pad, and means for holding said paper at the other end of said pad.

14. In a head rest, the combination of a pad, a frame for supporting said pad, a receptacle for holding paper, a Wire member for holding said paper at one end of said pad, and a shaft for holding said paper at the other end of said pad.

15. In a head rest, the combination of a pad, a frame for supporting said pad, means for holding a roll of paper, means for securing said paper at one end of said pad, and means for securing said paper at the other end of said pad.
