Be it known that I, GIUSEPPE CARMELO LARAIA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im-- provements in Headrests for Barber or like Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in head rests for barber or like chairs and aims to provide improvements therein.

The invention provides a head rest of the type in which the upper surface is covered with a sheet of paper, wherein improved means are provided for holding the paper smooth and taut over the head rest and for shielding the roll of paper, from which the paper is supplied, when the head rest is turned back in its out-of-use position.

The invention further provides a head rest which is of simple and economical construction, and which liably. v

An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the head rest, shown applied to a chair, looking in the direction of the arrow I, Fig. 2.

Referring to said drawings, A designates the back of a chair, B the head rest, and C a post or rack bar upon which the head rest is preferably connected in a manner to permit to be swung out of the way when its use is not desired.

The head rest B is conveniently composed of a frame comprising a casting 1, side plates 2 secured to the casting, and a pad 3 which may be conveniently supported by coiled springs 4 attached at their ends to the side plates 2.

This shield and friction member is carried by a rod 141- which is pivoted at its ends in a part of the frame, as the casting 1, and is pressed into contact with the roll by a coiled spring 15 having one end attached to said shield, and its other end held by a nut 16 upon the screw 17 which may be used for securing the side plate to the casting 1, at each side. The shield 13 may be provided with a projection 18 adapted to strike against the cap screw 9 when the roll of paper 6 is removed, thus limiting the movement of the shield 13.

The jaw member 26 (particularly the part 29 thereof) is pressed against the plate 21 by means of a plate 35. The plate 35 has ears 36 through which the rod 23 passes, and on which rod the plate 35 may turn. A spring 37 having one end connected to the plate 35, and its other end passing through a hole 38 in the car 22 (which is fixed) presses the plate 35 in a direction to press the plate 27, and hence press the jaw mem her and the part 29 down upon the opposite jaw member or plate 21.

When sufiicient of the paper has been unrolled, the thumb-piece may be released, permitting the plate 35 to press the clamping part 26 downward and inward, bringing the part 29 against the part 21, and thus firmly clamping the paper.

What is claimed is 1. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll, and a paper clamp, and a plate bearing upon said roll and forming a friction clamp and shield for completely covering one side of said paper roll, and means for removably holding said roll, said a stop to limit the inward movement when the roll is removed.

2. A barber or like chair headrest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, a movable member, said movable member comprising a plate having slotted ears permitting sliding and rot ting movement thereof, said fixed part comprising a rod running across the head rest and passing through the slots in said ears, and means pressing said movable member into clamping relation with said fixed part.

3. A barber or like chair headrest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, a movable member, said fixed part comprising a rod running across the headrest and a plate mounted upon said rod, said movable member comprising a plate having slotted ears permitting sliding and rotating movement thereof and means pressing said movable member in clamping relation with said fixed part.

A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, a movable part, said fixed part comprising two rods running'across the head rest, and a plate having ears passed through by one of said rods and having an edge turned around the other of said rods.

5. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, a movable part, said movable part comprising a plate having a curled edge forming the active clamping portion and slotted ears permitting rotating and sliding movement thereof.

6. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll anda paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, a movable part, said movable part comprising a plate having a curled edge forming the active clamping portion, slotted ears, and a rod fixed to the head rest passing through said slots in said ears and around which said movable part may turn and on. which it may slide, whereby, .when moved to uncla-mping position, said 'movable part may move up and away from the lower side of the paper.

7. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, a movable part, said movable part comprising a plate having a curled part forming the active clamping portion, a cutting edge below said clamp, and a loose connection with the head restpermitting upward and outward movement thereof adapted to expose the edge of the paper adjacent said clamp, for convenience in grasping;

A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, amovable part, said movable part comprising a plate having a curled edge forming the active clamping portion, a cutting edge below said curled edge and slotted ears permitting rotating and sliding movement thereof.

9. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, a movable member, said movable member comprising a plate having slotted ears permitting a rotating and sliding movement thereof, means for moving said movable member, said means comprising a rotatable rod having an arm and finger-piece thereon.

10. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, a movable part, said movable part comprising a plate having slotted ears permitting upward and outward movement of said movable part.

11. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, a movable part, said movable part comprising a plate having slotted ears permitting upward and outward movement of said movable part, and a rod having a finger-piece projecting at one side of the head rest and having means thereon for moving said movable part.

12. A barber or like chair headrest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, a movable part, a rod running across said headrest, said fixed part being attached to said rod, said movable part having a loose connection with said rod, and a spring pressed part pressing said movable part in clamping relation with said fixed part.

13. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, a movable part, a spring-pressed plate pressing said movable part into clamping relation with said fixed part, a rod running across said head rest, said fixed part being attached to said rod, said spring-pressed plate being pivoted on said rod, and a second rod to which said fixed part is also connected, said movable clamp-part having a loose connection with said second rod.

14. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a. paper clamp, three rods running from side to side of said head rest, said clamp comprising a fixed plate attached to two of said rods, a movable plate having a slotted connection with two of said rods and movable outward and upward, and a spring-pressed plate pivoted upon one of said rods pressing said movable plate against said fixed plate, said movable plate, when moved upward exposing,.

15. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, three rods running from side to side of said head rest, said clamp comprising a fixed plate attached to two of said rods, a movable plate having a slotted connection with two of said rods and movable outward and upward, and

a spring-pressed plate pivoted upon one of said rods, pressing said movable plate against said fixed plate, said movable plate, when moved, exposing, for convenient grasping, the edge of the paper released from the clamp by the movement of said movable plate, and means for moving said movable plate comprising a rod having a finger-piece and an arm thereon adapted to contact with said movable plate.

16. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part and a movable part, said movable part comprising a plate having slotted ears permitting a rotating and sliding movement thereof, means pressing said movablepart into clamping relation with said fixed part, and means for moving said movable clamping part against the action of said pressing means, out of clamping position.

17. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part and a movable part, said movable part, when moved to unclamping position, moving up and away from the lower edge of the paper, a springpressed part pressing said movable part into clamping relation with said fixed part, and means for moving said movable clamping part out of clamping position, said means comprising a rock-shaft having a fingerpiece thereon and an arm adapted to transmit the rocking movement of said shaft to said movable clamping part.

18. A barber or like chair head rest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part, a movable member, said movable member having a loose connection with the headrest, and means for moving said movable member, said means comprising a rock-shaft having means thereon adapted to impart a rocking and sliding movement to said movable member.

19. A barber or like chair headrest, comprising a paper roll and a paper clamp, said clamp comprising a fixed part and a movable member, said movable member comprising a plate having slotted ears permitting a rotating and sliding movement thereof, and means for moving said movable member out of clamping position.
