Description
D. C. WILLIAMS. DEVICE FOR HOLDING ARTICLES USED IN SEWING.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 25, 1915-.
amamlioz ,D. 6. Wz'iiz'ams DAVID C. WILLIAMS,
OF HARRISBURG,
I LL IN 0 IS.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING ARTICLES USED IN SEWING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May .9, 1916.
Application filed June 25, 1915. Serial No. 36,304.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID C. NILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Saline and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Articles Used in Sewing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for holding articles used in sewing and has for its principal object the improvement of the structure shown in my patent granted December 31, 1912, and numbered 1,049,021, avoiding the use of shafting and simplifying the construction in many respects.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, Fig. 3 is a verticalv sectional View Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the spool cups or holders removed.
Referring more particularly to the drawing A represents a frame consisting of a back plate 1 of suitable material having the laterally extending side flanges 2 arranged in parallelism. and provided with extension ears or arms 3. These ears each have inwardly extending slotted lips 4 which support the spool cups or holders 6 andreceive the locking tongs 7 bent up from said cups or holders. Each cup or holder is constructed of a single piece of resilient metal in form describing more than a semi-circle and having its edges flared outwardly to facilitate the insertion of the spool into the cup. These cups are also retained in position by other locking ears 8 formed on the cups and bent over the lower edge of the arms 3.
Each cup is provided in its forward edge with a U-shaped cut to permit of the convenient passage of the thread to the guiding point to be hereinafter described and the upper forward edge of each cup or holder is provided with knives 9 by which the thread may be severed.
Secured to the front of the back plate by cars 10 projecting through the back plate and lying between the back plate and the spool holders is an auxiliary back plate 11 which holds in position a pin receiving pad 12 which is exposed through slots 13 formed in the side flanges 2. This auxiliary back plate is provided with a vertically extending resilient finger 14 arranged to receive a thimble and is also provided with a depending finger 15 lying over the finger 16 formed on the back 1. The finger 15 is provided with a vertically extending notch 17 which registers with a similar notch 18 formed in the finger 16 thus providing a point for the guiding of the thread. As will be seen, the point is of such character that the thread may be readily drawn into the same without inserting the end. The finger 15 is also provided with an off-set 19 in which a needle holder 20 is resiliently retained.
In this type of device the shafting used in my former patent is done away with and the spools sprung into the cups or holders where they freely rotate without any axis and from which they can be readily removed.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a back plate having forwardly projecting bracket arms, inwardly extending slotted ears on the arms, spool holders arranged between the bracket arms and tongs on the spool holders fitting through the slots in the ears and engaged over the lower edges of the bracket arms.
2. A device of the class described comprising aback plate having forwardly projecting bracket arms, inwardly extending slotted ears on the arms, spool holders arranged between the bracket arms, tongs on the spool holders fitting through the slots in the ears and engaged over the lower edges of the bracket arms, said spool holders comprising resilient'members curled to describe more than semi-circles and having restricted entrances and thread cutting knives formed on said spool holders.
3. A device of the class described comprising a main back plate, spool holding members carried thereon, an auxiliary back plate arranged between the main back plate and said spool holding members, overlapping fingers on the main and auxiliary back plates, said fingers having notches disposed at right angles and registering to produce a thread guiding point.
4. In a device of the class described, a main back plate, spool supporting devices carried thereby an auxiliary back plate ar- In testimony whereof I affix my signature ranged between the main plate and the spool in presence of two witnesses, supportin devices dependin fin ers on the 7 main and auxiliary back plat s having DAVID 5 notches forming a thread guiding point, the l/Vitnesses:
finger on the auxihary plate having a lateral CHARLES GATHCART, off-set arranged to receive a needle holder. JAMES H. PEPPER.
