SEWING-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Application led September 13, 1915. Serial N o. 50,483.
T all 107mm t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY LA Ron, a citizen of the United States, residing at North River, in the countyof Warren and State of New `York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Tables, of which the following is a specilication, referencer being had to the accompanying drawings. v
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tables and has for its primary object to provide a simply constructed andvery convenient and serviceable sewing table in which provision is made for receiving and supporting spools, thimbles, shears, pins and like articles.
The invention hasfor an additional object to provide `a table for the above purpose having a supportingstandard or pedestal mounted to rotate upon a suitable base and provided with means for locking the same in various positions uponr such rotation, so that the articles carried by the top Aof the table may be disposedy in position for con venient access. i
The invention has for still another object to provide a sewing table having a stationary top section and a cover or movable section, said stationary section `being provided with holding or retaining devices forarticles generally usedby dress-makers, said articles being inclosed and protected by the movable top of the tablewhen the same is in its closed position.
It is an additional object of the invention to provide a sewingtable having a body construction provided with `means for supporting a plurality of sliding drawers or travs.
llVith the above an'd other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of `parts to ybe hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated inthe accompanying drawing, in which-` Figure 1` is a side'elevation of a sewing table illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention; Fig. P/is a top plan view of thetable with kthe movable top orcover tion taken on the line 55, of Fig. 3; Fig. G is a detail fragmentary perspective view of the stationary section of the table top.
`Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the base upon which the table construction is supported. This base may be of any desired ornamental configuration and is provided with a plurality of spaced feet G.
7 designates the pedestal of the table which is provided in its lower end with a xed, longitudinally projecting, threaded rod 8 to extend through a central opening 9 in the base 5. A nut 10 is threaded upon the lower end of said rod to hold the pedestal in connection with said base. In the lower under face of the pedestal 7, the circularly arranged series of sockets 11 are formed. To the under side of the base 5, one end of a leaf spring 12 is fixed. A vertically disposed pin 13 is loosely connected to the medial `portion of this spring plate by 'a suitable yoke indicated at 1st and said pin extends upwardly through an opening 15 formed in the base 5. A foot-actuated rod 16 is also mounted in the base 5 and has its lower end loosely connected to the free end of the leaf spring 12. Normally, the spring 12 holds the upper end of the pin 13 in one of the sockets 11 provided in the lower end of the pedestal 7, thereby preventing rotation of said pedestal. When it is desired to rotate the pedestal upon the base the rod 16 is depressed with the foot, so as to force the free end of the spring 12 downwardly and thus also move the pin 13 downwardly in the base 5 and out of the sockets 11. After the table has been rotated to the desired position, pressure upon the rod 16 is released so that the spring 12 will act to force the pin upwardly and engage the same in another of the sockets 11.
Upon the upper end of the pedestal 7, the stationary section y1'? of the table top is rigidly secured by means of bolts, screws or other analogous fastening means. Upon the upper surface of this top section and in spaced relation to the perimeter thereof, the upstanding or vertical wall 18 is secured, said wall inclosing a polygonabshaped space divided at its rear portion by means yof a plurality ofparallel walls 19 and transversely disposed connecting walls 2O into a plurality of article receiving compartments for the purpose of receiving pins and like articles. lTo the inner wall 19,V a corrugated metal plate 21 is iixed which provides convenient means for receiving and supporting hair-pins. A suitable pin cushion, indicated at 22 is arranged along the inner face of one side of the wall 18. Spaced vertically disposed hooks 23 are also arranged contiguous to the wall 18 and are adapted to receive and support shears of various kinds. A bracket, indicated at 24 is also fixed upon the inner' face of this wall to support a marking rule,
pen knife or other article. A plurality of spaced vertical division walls 25 extend outwardly from the wall 1S and provide compartments to receive spools of thread, vertical. posts or pins 26 being fixed in the section 17 of the table top to receive the spools.
27 Ydesignates a series of supporting pins which are Xed in the top. section 17 at its rear portion and on opposite sidesy of the vertical wall 18, said pins being provided for the purpose of vreceiving and supporting thimbles. n
Upon the outer face of the front portion of the wall 18, a horizontally disposed rod 28 is secured at its extremities and upon each end of this rod, one end of an arm 29 is loosely engaged. Each of these arms is provided with an aXle pin 30 on its free end to receive a thread spool. The arms 29 normally-rest upon vertical bars or cleats 31 projecting outwardly from the wall 18. The thread spools are thus rotatably supported between the cleats so that the thread may be conveniently drawn therefrom.
rIhe movable section or cover 82 of the table top is provided with a vertical wall 33 adjacent to its edge which is adapted to rest upon the outer edge of the stationary section 17 of the table top and to inclose the various article supports which are arranged upon said stationary section. This movable cover is hinged, as at 34, to the rear ed e portion of the stationary top section 17. lVhile I have shown the table top as of octagonal form in plan, it will of course be apparent that the same may be constructed in various other polygonal shapes vor can be of circular form, if desired.
To Vthe under side of the body wall of the v movable section or cover 32, a corrugated metal strip 35 is secured for the purpose of receiving darning or crocheting needles. The front portion of the vertical wall 33 .of the coveris provided with a suitable lock, indicated at 36, the latch element of which is adapted to engage with the keeper plate 37 fixed in the upper surface of the stationary top section 17. The latch boltv is actuated by means of a rotatable knob or nger piece 38.
To the pedestal 7 of theytable and in spaced relation to the top section 17, two pairs of horizontally disposed parallel bars 39 are secured, the endsof said bars in each pair being connected by a metal plate 40 having upstanding flanges 41 on its longitudinal edges. A metal framework 42 is secured upon the bars 39 at one side of the Vpedestal and this framework is lprovided with a division wall 43. Drawers 44 are slidably mounted in the frame above and bev low this division wall. Relatively large drawers 45 are removably supported by the respective pairs of bars 39 on each side of the table pedestal. To the bottom of each of these latter drawers, spaced cleats 46 are secured. When the drawers are placed in position, the flanges 41 of the plates 40 eX- tend upwardly beyond these cleats and serve as guides Vfor the drawers and prevent the laterall shifting movement of the same. Each of the drawers 44 and 45 is provided in the inner face of its front wall with a suitable lock including a movable locking bolt 41 which extends downwardly through plate 40.V Thus the drawer is securely locked against outward movement. On the opposite side of the table pedestal with respect to the metal frame 42, a compartment 47 is constructed and is provided in its outer front wall with a hinged door 48, whereby said compartment may be closed. One of the drawers 45 is divided by a plurality of parallel slats 49 into a number of compartments for the purpose of receiving patterns or like articles. Onerend of a chain 50 is secured to the verticalwall 18 of the table top andV the other end thereof is attached to the movable cover 31, said chain serving as a support for the cover when in its open position.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a highly serviceable and convenient sewing table., the top of which is provided withV means for supporting a large numberof articles, any desired one of which may be very easily and quickly removed by simply rotating the table to the desired position. The arrangement of the several parts is very compact so that the table will occupy but small'space. When the movable cover or section is in closed position and locked upon the body section 17 of ythe table top, the articles are covered and protected andy liability of their loss will be obviated.
While I have shownk and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts of the device, it is to be understood that the same isV susceptible of considerable modication therein and I therefore reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention, as claimed.
lio
Having thus described this invention, what I desire to claim as new and secure by Letters Patent, is
In a table, a fiat polygonal-shaped top, a vertical Wall secured upon the top in spaced relation to its marginal edge, spaced supporting bars arranged eXteriorly of said Vertical Wall and extending outwardly therefrom toward the marginal edge of the table top, vertically swinging spool supports mounted upon said vertical Wall and normally resting upon said supporting bars,` and a cover hinged upon the marginal edge f of the table top adapted, when in closed position, to inclose said vertical Wall and 15 the swinging spool supports.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in `the presence of two Witnesses.
