IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCHERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,214, dated August 22, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES H. DE POE, of Boonton, in the county of' Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Carpet-Stretcher; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part,

of this specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in carpet-stretchers; and it consists in a long straight stock adapted for applying to the loor at the angle between it and the base-board by the lower end, which terminatesin a pointed metal piece with a fixed jaw projecting from the side opposite the base board, and a swinging jaw above it, between which the carpet is griped by the j amming of the upper jaw upon the lower one when the upper end of the stock is pushed towa-rd the wall, all as hereinafter described.

A is a stock or handle, of suitable size and length, to be used by a person standing some distance from the wall toward which the carpet is to be stretched, terminating in a pointed metal piece, B, adapted to be placed on the floor at the base-board and serve as a fulcrum on which to turn the stock when stretching' the carpet. C is a iixed jaw, corrugated or roughened on the upper side, and supported at some distance above the point of B on an arm, I), projecting from the wall into the room when the instrument is in workin g position. F is a swinging jaw suspended above jaw C by a long shank, G, from the end of an arm, H 5 said jaw F is corrugated on the lower side, or the one acting in conjunction with jaw O.

It is so arranged that when the carpet is placed y upon jaw (l and the instrument is ready to be set in action it will close upon the carpet by the action of gravity, so that the friction thereof, when the instrument is moved toward the wall, will cause it to gripe and hold the carpet iirinly to stretch it.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Tlie improved carpet-stretcher, consisting of the stock A B, iiXed jaw C, and swinging jaw G, combined an d arranged substantially as specilied.
