FRANK G'. BURDETT, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
GUN-REST.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, i916.,
Application filed November 5, 1913. Serial No. 799,288.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK G. BURDETT, citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Rests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wearing apparel and particularly to a coat for the use of hunters,`members of military organizations or other persons of whom it is the custom to carry articles upon the shoulder.
The invention relates more particularly to the construction of the shoulder of the garment and especially to a rest formed o n the garment, upon which a gun or other article may be lodged for convenience in carrying the same. u
rllhe object of the invention is to rovide a simple, cheap and efficient means or supporting a gun or other article conveniently and comfortably upon the shoulder. It is designed to keep the gun or other article from slipping o the shoulder, thereby` re.- lieving the arm and wrist from strain and the tiresome effort of continually bracing the gun or other article and shifting it to keep it in position upon4 the shoulder.
With the above primary and other incidental objects in view as will more fully appear in the specification, the invention consists of the features of construction, the parts and combinations thereof, or their equivalents, as hereinafter described and set forth in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the upper portion of a hunting coat to which the invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view on line mof Fig. 1.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the several views.
In the drawings, l is the collar, 2 the lapel and 3 the sleeve of the garment. Upon the shoulder there is provided a section 4: preferably though not necessarily padded with one or more thicknesses of felt, fabric, wadding or other material designed to protect the shoulder of the wearer and to reinforce the garment at this point of greatest wear. 'llhere is provided upon this section t a transverse welt or ridge 5, projecting above the surface of the garment and forming a rest or support upon which the gun or other article may be lodged. rfhis rest or support may be formed separate from the garment and secured thereto in the desired position, but is preferably formed integral therewith. Likewise the entire section 4: may, if desired, be constructed separately to be applied to any garment in this form of an epaulet.
In Fig. 2 there is shown a construction in which the insert or padding 6, which may be of felt, fabric or other suitable material, is folded or plaited upon itself as shown 'at 7., to form the rest or support. The outer thickness 8 ofI the garment follows the gen eral contour of the fold or plait and is secured to the insert and the lining 9 by sewing at each side of the fold or plait as indicated-at 10.
From the above description, it will be apparent that there is thus provided a device of the character described, possessing the particular features of advantage before enumerated as desirable, but which obviously is susceptible of modification in its form, proportion, detail construction or arrangement of parts, without departing from the principle involved or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Vhile in order to comply with the statute, the invention has been described in language more or less specific as to certain structural features, it is to be understood that the in vention is not limited to any specic details but that the means and construction herein described comprise but one mode of putting the invention into eect, and the invention is therefore claimed broadly in any of its possible forms or modifications within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, claim:
A garment having a plait extending from the front toward the back formed in the material forming the shoulder portion thereof, said plait being located intermediate the collar and sleeve seams, the edge of the plait being turned upward toward the collar seam of the garment and secured in position to form an abrupt welt.
ln testimony whereof, l have hereunto set myV hand this 1st day of November, 1913.
l FRANK G. BURDETT.
