DAGGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1916.
Application led. February 21,1913. Serial No. 749,920.
To all whom it may concern.' l
Be it known that I, EDOUARD-PIERRE NICAUD, citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 5 Rue Lamartine, Blida, Algeria, have invented new and useful Improvements in Daggers, of which the following is a. specification. v
This invention relates to daggers or similar pointed weapons and has for its object an improved arm of this kind particularly intended for use as an arm of defense, the main feature thereof being that the sheath which normally covers the blade is automatically retracted into the handle when stabbing. The advantage thereof is that the person provided with the improved dagger, if suddenly attacked, can protect himself instinctively with his left arm and draw the dagger from his pocket with his right hand, the dagger being immediately ready for use, without having the trouble of removing any sheath from the same, which usually requires both hands and a certain time.
In the annexed drawing given by way of example: Figure l is a side view of the improved dagger, in its normal condition when carried in the pocket. Fig. 2 is a corresponding side View of the dagger in position when stabbing. Figs. 3 and t are longitudinal sections corresponding respectively to Figs. l and 2. Fig. 5 is a cross section along the line A-A, Fig. il.'
The dagger shown by way of example has a steel blade a of a cylindrical form and pointed at one end. The opposite end of the blade is screwed into a cap b which is to be secured on one end of the tubular handle o of the weapon. The cap may be internally threaded to be screwed onto the threaded end of the handle as shown. The opposite end of the handle c is closed by a wall Z having an opening 7". It is also surrounded by an annular shield or guard g formed'by a ring having an L cross section screwed or otherwise secured on the end of the handle. In the handle, is mounted the sheath 7L comprising a metal tube which can slide through the opening f of the handle and is closed at one end by a wall z' provided with a small opening through which the blade can extend. At its opposite end, the sheath h is provided with an outer cylindrical flange j which is guided in the handle. In the sheath 7i is located a helical spring 7c which surrounds the blade a and bears at one end against the wall z' of the sheath and, at the other end, against the cap Y) so that the sheath is normally pushed outwardly over the blade, the flange j abutting against the end wall fl of the handle.
The dagger thus constructed can be carried in the pocket without being placed in an outer sheath as the blade is entirely hidden in the tubular sheath 7L. When the dagger is grasped by means of the handle and a blow is given therewith, the sheath is ar rested by the body against which the blow is struck while the blade penetrates into the same, the sheath 7L retracting into the handle. lVhen the dagger is withdrawn the sheath It protrudes again over the blade under the action of the spring 7c.
The blade may obviously have any other form or section.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A dagger comprising a handle; a bla-dc secured to the handle; a sheath of smaller diameter than said handle and adapted to be retracted into the handle or protruded over the blade, and having an interior flange at its outer end; and a spring arranged around the blade within said handle and sheath, and bearing at one end against the upper end of the handle and at the other end against the said flange of the lower end of the sheath.
In testimony whereof I have signed. my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDOUARD-PIERRE NICAUD.
