THREAD-TIP CLEANING-ROD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20,1907.
Application tiled March 13, 1907. Serial No. 362,226.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR M. SHEAKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have in`- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Tip Cleaning-Rods; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the characters oi reference marked thereon, which form1 a part ot this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cleaning rods for cleaning ries, shot-guns and other re arms, my object being to produce such a cleaning rod as will do the work for which it is designed easily and effectually and without the inconvenience of having the same getting stuck in the barrel of the Ere-arm, which is now so oitenthe case. This object I am able to accomplish by means of a thread-tip cleaning rod arranged and constructed in the manner as will appear by a perusal oi the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure l is a side fragmentary View of a rifle cleaning rod. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the tip of said rod. Fig. 3 is a side View, partly in section oa tip of a rod used for shot guns or other large bore guns. Fig. 4 vis a section taken relatively on a line xx of Fig. 3.
l designates the rod proper, the same being provided with a handle 2. The lower end of said rod has a tapered portion 3 enlarging abruptly into an annular shoulder 4, outward from which is a spiral-threaded tip 5. Encircling said rod is an annular depression 6, formed by the meeting of the tapered'surface 3 with the face oi the shoulder 4.
In using the device the cleaning cloth is wrapped around the threaded tip 5, the top thereof falling into and filling the recess 6. Then in cleaning the gun the threads of the portion 5 and the shoulder 4 holds said cloth intact and .prevents it from twisting, knotting or binding.
If by chance the cloth should stick or bind then the huntsman can grasp the handle 2 and turn it in the proper direction to permit the spiral threads on the portion 5 to unscrew their way clear from the cloth, and then the cloth may be easily driven clear from the gun.
Figs. 3 and 4 show the device as it is constructed for shot guns or other large bore guns in which the rod employed is ordinarily constructed oi metal. In my construction for the purpose of making the rod lighter the portion l is made oi wood, and provided with an integral cylindrical tip. Closely fitting upon said tip is provided a tubular metal casing having exterior spiral threads 5 corresponding to the described form of rod. This casing is secured to the portion l by means oi biting lugs 7, radially carried by the end of the casing, said lugs and casing end acting to reini'orce and strengthen the shoulder 4.
From the foregoing description it can be seen that I have produced a cleaning rod which substantially fulfils all the objects of the invention, as set forth herein. Y
While this description sets orth the present and preferred detail of construction of the device, still in practice many small deviations therefrom may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
A cleaning rod, comprising a rod proper of light material provided with a handle and having an integral cylindrical tip portion, a tapered portion and an angular shoulder forming a depression encircling said rod, an exteriorly spirally-threaded tubular casing carried by said tip portion of the rod and secured thereto by biting lugs integrally carried by the end of said casing and extending radially inward gripping the rod at said depression, said end of the casing and lugs alining with said shoulder.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR M. SHEAKLEY.
