MHTNESSES iNVENTQR fix/ 2am V. 72m Maze,
ATTORNEY i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA. V. VAN NAME, OF MARINERS HARBOR, NEW YORK.
RIFLE-GRIP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSI-IUA V. VAN NAME, citizen -of the.. United .States, residing at Mariners Harbor, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rifle Grips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its principal object the production of a device which is adapted 1 to be attached to the stock of a rifle for facilitating the gripping thereof.
Another object of this invention is the production of an adjustable rifle grip which is adjustably mounted upon the stock of the rifle thereby permitting the 7, same to bemoved to accommodate the iifpping thereof by persons having arms of i erent lengths.
Another object of this invention is the production of a rifle grip which has a plurality of sockets formed therein, whereby the thumb and fingers of the user may fit therein for facilitating the holding of the grip and at the same t me preventing injury to the hands of the user.
A still further object of this invention is the production of a rifle grip wherein the Figure 1 is a side elevation of the riflev grip applied to the arm.
Fig. 2 is a central transverse sec ion through a rifle showing the rifle grip in end elevation, and
Fig. 3 is a detail rifle rip.
Re erring more specifically to the accompanying drawing, it will be seen b referring particularly to Fig. 3 that the mile grip is formed from a blank sheet of material and comprising a body 1. This body 1 is bent to perspective view of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2'7, 1918.
Application filed September #8, 1917. Serial No. 193,780.
flanges 2are formed upon the ed es of the body 1. These flanges 2 are space apart as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 to provide sufiicient space in the positioning of the r1fle grip upon a rifle.
The rifle upon which this device is used is disclosed in general by the numeral 3 and is provlded with a stock 4. This stock 4 has an elongated slot 5, formed therein for purposes to behereinafter specified. The rifle grip is pos1t1oned upon the stock 4 so as to permit the flanges 2 thereof to bear upon the upper surface of the stock 4 as shown in Fig. 2. For this reason it is obvious that the stock will sufiiciently support the grip, although the grip may be moved along the stock 1n either direction to accommodate the user of the device. retaining bolt 6 passes through the opening 7 formed in the body 1 and also projects through the slot 5 formed in the stoc onto the projecting end of bolt 6 andin this way holds the bolt in set position. It is obvious that by shifting the winged nut, the body of the grip will be slightly loosened from its clampin in movement with the .stock 4 and at this time this grip may be moved to a desired position on the stock 4. The nut may then be tightened upon the bolt thus holding the body 1 in a binding engagement with the stock 4, whereby the grip is adjusted to accommodate the length of the the sheet metal body 1 inwardly for a slight distance whereby each socket-will be provided with a continuous shoulder 11 there around as clearly shown in Fig. 3. It will also be seen that the inner walls of these sockets may be roughened or slit as indicated at 12'for constitutin a suction gri for the thumb and fingers o the users han When this device is in use, it is mounted in a set position upon the stock of the gun, as above specified. It will accommodate the length of the-arm of the user and at this time the thumb of the left hand of the user 4. The winged nut 8 is screwed.
will fit within the thumb sockets 9 while the tips of the fingers will fit within the sockets tively broad bearing socket is provided against which the thumb and fingers of theusers hand will bear for assisting in holding the grip from slipping, although it W111 be impossible for the socket to 1n ure the users hand when the gun is firing. Furthermore the formation of the roughened element within the sockets will also aid the user in.
V holding the grip from slipping.
It is a wel known fact that very often the sights of a gun are pulled out of alinement with the target, when the trigger is pulled. If however a grip is provided so as to enable the operator to firmly hold the grip as he becomes very tense at this time and naturally grips firmly the rifle, he can very easily hold the rifle against movement and thus increase the accuracy of the shot. Therefore, the present device will enable the operator to firmly hold the rifle against movement whlle the socket formed in the body of the rifle grip will facilitate the gripping of this device. Furthermore since the rifle grip 1s formed from sheet metal it is very light and will not constitute a burden whenin use owing to an increased weight upon the rifle, while it may easily be adjusted to accommodate the user.
Since the rifle grip is stamped from a blank sheet of material it may be very easily constructed, since the sockets formed therein may be struck at the same time the grip is struck from a blank, while the flanges may also be folded at this time.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very efl'iclent rifle grip has been produced which will facilitate the holding of a rifle very steady when in operation.
It is of course obvious that many changes may be made in thedetail construction of this rifle grip such for instance as the arrangement of the sockets, without departin from the spirit of the present invention, an for this reason it is not intended to limit the rifle grip to the specific form herein shown, as it is desired to include all such forms of the rifle grip as properly come within the scope of the claims.
What I claim is 1. A rifle grip comprising a body, saidshoulders, whereby said body may be firmly bent to. comprise a substantially U-shape I structure in cross section, inwardly projecting flanges form d on the edges of said body, said body having a plurality of sockets formed therein, said sockets having continuous shoulders formed therearound, whereby said shoulders will facilitate the holding of the body, said sockets having roughened inner portions, a bolt connecting the side por tiolns of said body and a nut carried by said bo t.
3. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a rifle stock having ,a slot formed therein, a rifle grip comprising a body, said body having flanges formed thereon, said body fitting upon said stock and said flanges gripping said stock thereby positively supporting said grip u on said stock, a bolt passing through said ody and through said slot, means carried by said bolt for c amping said body upon said stock whereby said grip will be retained "u on said stock in an ad uSted set position, an sockets formed in said body whereby said grip may be firmly held.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a rifle stock having a slot formed therein, a rifle grip comprising a body, a bolt passing throu h said body and said slot, means carried y said bolt for clamping said body upon said stock, thus causing said (grip. to be retained upon said stock in an a justed set position.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a rifle stock having a slot formed therein, a rifle grip comprising a body, said body having flanges formed thereon, said body fitting upon said stock and said flanges gripping said stock for supporting said grip upon the stock, a bolt pass ing through said body and through said slot, means carried by said bolt for clamping said body upon said stock, thus retaining said grip in an adjusted position upon said stock. 6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a rifle stock having a slot formed therein, a rifle grip comprising a body having flanges formed thereon, said body fitting upon said stock and said flanges gripping said stock for supporting said grip upon said stock, means carried by said body and passing through said slot for retainin the same in an adjusted set position, and
sockets formed in said body for facilitating the holding of said grip.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of aqrifle stock having a slot formed therein, a rifle grip comprising a body, said body fitting upon said stock, In testimony whereof I afiix my signature means carried by said body and projecting in presence of two witnesses.
through said slot for retaining sald body in JOSHUA V. VAN NAME. an ad usted set position upon said stock, and Witnesses:
5 sockets formed in said body for facilitating ABRAM E. DEPUY,
the holding of the grip. GEO. L. LEWIS.
