COVEB FOB. PASTE OR MUCILAGE JAES.
Specficaton of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, rere.
To all whom ?It may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST N. RITZ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State oi: lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Paste or Mucilage Jars; and I do hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in covers for paste or mucilage j ars particularly of that type with which is associated a suitable brush member for the application of the paste or mucilage.
A common dsadvantage encountered in the present type of cover or closure is the difficulty of inserting the brush in the jar after successivo Operations thereof, and in a manner procuring a suflicient scaling of the contents of the jar to prevent evaporation of the contents thereof, and it is an important object oi: the present invention to provide a cover or closure with which a brush member is associated in such manner as to permit its ready passage through the cover.
A further object resides in the provision of means associated with the cover whereby a wiping action of the brush may be had upon withdrawing it from the jar, to rid the brush of an undesired surplus of the contents of the jar in such a manner that said surplus contents or accumulations thereof form noinconvenience in reinserting the brush in the jar and further whereby such surplus is protected from exposure to the atmosphere to avoid evaporation thereof.
A still further object resides in the provision of a cover structure for paste or mucilage jars or the like which is of an exceedingly simple structure so as to pernit its manufacture and commercial application at a minimum cost.
lVith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resdes more particularly in the novel combination, arrangement and l'ormation of parts more particularly hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of the upper portion of a paste jar or pot having the improved cover associated therewith, and with the neck of the jar and the cover in section to more clearly disclose the structure thereof. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the body portion of the cover.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates the body of a paste pot which is provided with the usual relatively large neclr portion 6 on which is threaded a cap member 7 which forms the body of the improved cover and the top of this cap member has its intermediate portion inwardly ofl'set to fit within the bore of the pot neck. Associated with this body cap member 7 is a brush carrying member which comprises a plate 8 having its peripheral edge portion laterally turned at 9 to rest on the ofiset portion of the body cap and to fit within the recess formed by so ofi'- setting the body cap. The central portion of this plate 8 is provided with an opening and the material struck from the plate to form this opening is bent inwardly in the form of tongues 10 which are somewhat resilient and serve to frictionally grip the handle 11 of the brush 12.
To permit ready insertion of the brush through the body cap member, the ofiset portion thereoi is provided with an oval opening 13 which extends diametrically of the ofiset portion and which has its longitudinal and transverse diameters of considerably greater length than the corresponding cross diameters of the brush end. At the sides of this oval opening the body cap is further aperturedto provide slot portions 14: opening into the oval opening and being of a width approximately or slightly less than the width of the brush. Thus in the operation of this structure the brush i's inserted into the jar or pot through the oval opening 13 with its peripheral portion substantially parallel to the peripheral portions of the aperture 13, and in removing the brush it is gven a quarter rotation, to aline it with the slot portions 14: and is drawn outwardly through one of said slot portions 14: and thus any undesired surplus contents is wiped from the brush. This arrangement of apertures may be more concisely described as a pair of crossed slots, one of which Slots is wider than the other, but it is here noted that the present invention contemplates more broadly the provision of an opening normally larger than the cross sectional area fto ' from the brush by of the brush and tions, adapted to the same.
The brush carrying menber 8 forms What may be termed a second cap member to close the various apertured portions o' the main cap member and its laterally turned edge portions hold the body of the member spaced from the body cap member Whereby said member is prevented from sticking thereto by the adhesion of any paste or other mat ter which might occur on the top face of the said body cap member.
It is noted that paste or mucilage wiped contact with the body cap falls directly back into the receptacle, and merges with the body of contents thei-ein, and thus there is no accumulation of surplus contents such as would occur if the brush were Wiped against any other surface than the edge of a transverse plate, to thus eliminate the inconvenience encountered for instance in the ordinary mucilage jar wheren the brush is wiped against the neck of the provided with lateral porreceive the brush to wipe I Jar and accumulations occur in the neck which in practice choke the same against eficient and ready operation.
Although the present structure has been particularly described as in connection with paste or mucilage jars, it is obvious that it may find valuable applications in connection i with closures for jars containing other material than paste or mucilage and that various other embodinents of the invention may be employed within the scope of the appended claims without cleparting in any manner from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A closure for paste jars or the like comprsing a body member adapted to dispose over the mouth of the jar and having its intermediate portion inwardly ofi'set to form a consequent recess and provided with an opening having an extension of relatively restricted width, a brush member adapted to pass freely through the opening and a holding member carried by the brush and adapted to dispose within the said recess and to be held thereby to entirely cover the sald opening and its extension.
2. A olosure member for paste jarsvor the like comprisng a body portion adapted to dispose over the mouth of the jar and having its intermediate portion inwardly offset, to form a consequent recess and provided with an opening having an extension of relatively reduced width, a brush member adapted to 'reely pass through the opening and a carrying means for the brush member comprising a plate secured thereto and having its peripheral portions laterally turned to dispose in the said recess.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of `Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
