To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OConn'on, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented; a certain new and useful Improvement in Roller Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in roller side bearings.
An object of the invention is to provide" a roller side bearing for railway cars and the like which is of simple construction and wherein means are provided in the form of a bearing plate which also serves the function of protecting the anti-friction members from dirt and the weather.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvement in the parts and devices herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming apart of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevational view of portions of a body bolster and truck bolster of a car showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fi 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the improved side bearing. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical 8" sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fl 3. x
In said drawing, 10 denotes the body 85 bolster, 11 the truck bolster swiveled at their centers in the usual manner. The body bolster is provided with a bearing casting or'plate 12' on its under side and, as shown, the improved roller bearing A 1s attached to the truck bolster.
The roller hearing A comprises a base casting 13 having end flanges 14, by which (it is adapted to be riveted or otherwise se-,, cured to the bolster. The casting 13 is also provided with spaced side walls 15 and 16, the latter b'eingcurved along its upper edge as indicated at 17 to form a spring chamber for a longitudinally arranged spring 18. The bottom of the casting 13 is cut away as indicated at 19 in order to permit any foreign matter to fall therethrou h, and also to lighten the casting. Mounte between the side walls 15 and 1.6 are anti-friction rollers 20-20, the same being supported by shafts Specification of Letters Apr. 3 .8, Serial tat. aaero.

Suitable bushings 24: are preferably interposed between each of the journals 21 and the corresponding rollers. In order to provide a more substantial bearing and to more uniformly distribute the load, I provide a bearing plate 25 of case hardened material which bearing plate 25, as shown, is sub stantially of inverted U-shape in cross section and has the sides 26 and 2'? thereof extending downwardly over the ends of the anti-friction rollers between the latter and. the side walls 15 and 16, each of the depending sides 26 and 2"! of the bearing plate having an elongated slot 28 to accommodate the journals 21 and permit the bearing plate to slide back and forth. On the side adjacent the spring 18 the bearing plate 25 is provided near its ends with laterally extending lugs or projections 29-29 which act as'followers and engage the ends of the spring 18. The ends of the spring 18 also engage shoulders 30-30, formed integrally with the curved section 17 at its ends and which thus act as stops for the spring.
In operation, when relative turning of the bolsters occurs and pressure is exerted from the thrust block 12 against the bearing plate 25 the latter will move in accordance with the direction of movement of the body bolster, and in being so moved, the plate 525 will roll upon the anti-friction rollers 29, This movement of the plate 25 will, of course, compress the spring 18 and upon release of the pressure on the plate 25 the latter will be immediately returned to normal central position under the influence of said spring. As will be understood, travel of the plate 25 is limited in either d"- rection by the same engaging at the ends of the slots 28 with the corresponding journal or shaft 21.
From the preceding description it will be seen that the device which I have devised consists of relatively few parts which may be readily assembled and disassembled. and various elements replaced; the pressure is distributed over a large area; and the hearing plate 25 is so designed that it protects the anti-friction rollers from the weather and acts as'a shedder of rain, sleet, dirt, etc.
I claim: 1. In a rollerside bearing, the combination with a base casting having spaced side walls and anti-friction rollers rotatably therethrough, and spring means for centering said plate. 7
2. In a roller side bearing the combination with a base casting having spaced, upf-i standing side Walls, anti-friction rollers:
mounted between said walls, fixed journals supported at their ends in said walls and on which said rollers are rotatably mounted, of a bearing plate mounted on the top of said rollers and adapted to slide back and forth relatively to said casting, said casting being provided with a spring chamber alongone side thereof, aspring mounted Within said chamber, and projections at the side of said bearing plate engaging the ends of said spring, said spring centering the plate after each actuation ofthe side bear- In Witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 24th day of April 1915.
