THE COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH co., WASHINGTON D c EDWARD n. ETNYRE, or onneon, rumors.
SPRINKLEBFHEAD.
To'all whom it may concern: v Be it known that/I, EDWARD D. ETNYRE, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Oregon, in thecounty of Ogle and State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Sprinkler-Heads, of
which the following is a speeification.
This invention relates to sprinkler heads of the type adapted for use in sprinkling water, oil, or other liquids upon a roadway. The object ofthe invention is to provide improved means for regulating the direction in which the liquid is discharged, the
extent of surface covered bythe stream of fluid, and the rate of discharge.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a rear elevation of a sprinkler head embodying the features of my invention. Fig.
2' is a vertical central sectional view taken in-the plane of dotted line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
i Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 are fragmental' views showing different" adjustments of the sprinkler head.
In the embodiment herein shown, the sprinkler headcomprises a cylinder or body 1 having an open lower end anda closed upper end. Upon one side of the cylinder is a nipple 2 by means of which the cylinder may be mounted upon a supply pipe 3. Said pipe constitutes means for supporting I the cylinder 1 in vertical position at a suitable point on a sprinkler wagon, as, for example, at the rear end of the wagon. There may be two sprinkler heads at opposite sides of the wagon, or a single sprinkler head maybe located centrally upon the wagon.
.In the rear side of the cylinder 1 near its upper end is a narrow horizontal discharge slot 4. Telescoping with the cylinder 1 is a cylinder 5 having a closed lower end and an open upper end. The cylinder 5 has a port 6 which establishes communication between the supply pipe 3 and theinterior of the cylinder 5. In the rear side of the cylinder 5 and near the upper end thereof is a slot 7 which is adapted to register with the slot 4. The slot 7 is somewhat elliptical, being wider at its midportion than at its ends. The inner cylinder 5 may be slid up or down to throw the slot 7 somewhat out of-register with the slot 4. To prevent the inner cylinder from turning with relation to the outer cylinder during such sliding movement, I provide suitable means, as, for
7 example, a screw 8 seated in the inner cylinder and projecting through a vertically Specification of Letters Patent.

elongated slot 9 in the outer cylinder. The i I means for adjusting the cylinder 5 with reference to the cylinder 1 may be of any suitable construction, that herein shown consisting of a screw 10 pivoted to the lower end of the cylinder 5, said screw extending freely through an opening in a yoke 11 which is fixed to and extends downwardly from the cylinder 1.
12 are look nuts turned on the screw 10 at opposite sides of the yoke 11 to hold the cylinder 5 in adjusted position.
' When the cylinder 5 is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, wherein the slots 4 and 7 are in register, the stream of liquid is directed approximately horizontally out suitably adjusting the position of the cylinder 5. p
' The means for entirely or partially cutting off the flow of liquid comprises a cap 13 adapted to fit slidably upon the upper end of the cylinder 1. Said cap has in its rear side an opening 14 (Fig. 1), which opening has a straight lower wall 15, two side or vertical walls 16 and 17, and an upwardly arched or curved upper wall 18. The horizontal dimension of the opening '14 may be equal to or slightly in excess of the length of the slot 4. When the cap 13 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the slot 4 is fully open. The cap 13 may be lowered into the position shown in Fig. 5 in order to entirely close the slot 4. or the cap 13 may be partially lowered to close a greater or less portion of the ends of the slot 4, thus reducing the width of the stream. If it be desirable to interrupt the flow so that the liquid shall be discharged only at one side of the vertical center line of the sprinkler head, the cap 13 may be turned into a position such as that shown in Fig. 6.
meshing with gear teeth 20 formed upon the cap 13. The teeth 20 are of sufficient length so as to remain in mesh with the rack bar 19 throughout'the range of vertical ment of the cap. Any suitable means may; be provided for reciprocating. the rack bar 19.
The means for raising and low'ering the cap 13 may comprise a lever 21 which is" connected by means of a link 22 toqa-"sleeve' 23, said sleeve being mountedon thetop wall ofthe cap 13 for-rotation upon the axis of said cap; The lever 21 may be oper:
ated' by any suitable means.- v It will be seen that the cap 13Hmay be raised or lowered to any desired extent, and
may attlie-sametime be turned-in either direction to-a greater or less degree. Said cap thereby aifords meansfor controlling the size of the stream, and also permits. the operator to cover any desired portion of the roadway. j a
Q I claim as my invention: i
'1. A sprinkler head having, in combination, a cylindrical body having a peripheral horizontally-elongated discharge opening,
said body having a closed upper end and an open lower end and an attaching nipple I prevent turning movement of the cylinder, and a cap fitting upon the outside of the:
upper end of the body-,said cap being rota table and axially movable with reference to said body, said cap having a horizontallyelongated opening adapted to register with the discharge opening, the openingin the capuhaving an upwardly curved orz arched Wa i M v i l V I v 2, sprinkler head having, in combinatioii, a 'vertically disposed cylindrical body, means for supplying liquid to said body, said body havingfla v horizontally-elongateddischarge opening in its periphery, amemher tocontrol the angle of inclination of the a discharge, said member being movable trans- 'versely of said opening within the-body, said cover; and uncover more or less of the disa charge opening.
. v3,,A spr' klerjheadhaving, in combination, a verticallyv disposed cylindrical body I provided with a horizontally-elongateddisecharge opening, a capv fitting upon the outsideof the body and movable longitudinally e and transversely of saiddischarge opening,-
sIa-id cap having an arched opening therein arranged to expose the discharge opening and mechanism for rotating and axially slid ing said cap 741'. k spr nkler head having, in combination, a cylindrical body having an elongateddischarge opening, and acontrolling mem her which is rotatable and axially movable with reference to said body, said controlling j member having an-elongated opening adapted to register with the firstmentioned openmg, the second mentioned openingrhaving.
a curved or arched wall.v v In testimony whereof, I hereunto setmyhand in'the presence of two witnesses. 7
