Description

PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR DE WITZLEBEN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARREL-PITCHING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,956, dated August 8, 1871 antcdated August 1, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR DE WITZLEBEN, of Vashington, District of Columbia, have made an Improvement in Pitching-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for pitching theinterior surfaces of such barrels and kegs as are employed for the reception of malt liquors. The object of my invention is to provide a device wherein caloric may be gen erated by combustion of fuel, and conveyed by a current of atmospheric air forced through the pipe j' into the grating N and around the sides thereof, (said grating being made a few lines smaller for the latter purpose,) and out at the pipe h into casks or barrels wherein is provided pitch, which is melted by said heat and thereby caused to spread over the interior surface of the cash.
Figure l is a plan view of the casing of device. Fig. 2 is a view of the grate, in perspective.
It consists of the casing A, provided with the pipes f h, lid F, and the adjustable grate N M, and in their peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement in a device for pitching barrels and other similar malt-liquor receptacles. -A is a metallic casing, the sides a a being vertical, and the lateral ends of conic or pyramidal shape, projecting outwardly from the former, the device being supported upon adjustable legs in a manner similar to that which obtains in the construction of stoves. Said casing projectslaterally at either side thereof to points wherein are providedV orifices, in which are rigidly attached the pipes f and h, to which others in practice are attached on either sides thereof. Said casing is provided with the lid F, which, by the aid of the flange G, fits tightly, and thereby prevents the escape of air during the process. The pipe h projects longitudinally into the casing, as shown, to within a few lines of the adjustable grate N, in order that ashes or cinders may thereby be caught and prevented from being expelled into the cask during the process of pitching. N M is a quadrilateral metallic grate, designed for the reception of fuel, and provided with the apertures L L in the sides M M, which are otherwise solid, for the insertion of hooks, wherewith to remove the same from the casing when desirable. In order to save time the grate M N may be duplicated, and when the fuel contained in one is consumed it may be removed and another provided with fuel quickly inserted in the casing. The sides N N are slotted or fashioned as grates, in order to admit the atmosphere in its passage to convey the heat arising from combustion through the pipe h into cash, as before said.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination and arrangement of the casin g A, pipes f and h, and lid F, with iiange G, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a pitching device, an adjustable grate, constructed and arranged substantially in the manner shown and described.
3. The combination and arrangement of the casing A, pipes f and h, and grating M N, substantially in the manner shown and described.
ARTHUR DE WITZLEBEN.
