Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUKE W. TAYLOR, OF UPPER FALLS POST-OFFICE, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOP-HEADS.
Specification forming part vof Letters Patent No. 117,943, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUKE W. TAYLOR, of Weathersiield, Upper Falls Post-Office, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Mop-Head; and that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a mop-head that shall be simple, cheap, and useful. The invention consists in ceiling the ends of the movable jaw or binder of a mop-head into a spiral, so that it maybe operated with a positive upand-down motion, by projections on a revolving` collar working between said coil or spiral, as in a screw.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a side view of my invention, and Fig. 2 an edge view of the same in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several gures.
A represents the cross-head or fixed jaw of a mop-head; B, the socket, cast onto the crosshead; C, the handle. These several parts being' common in mop-heads, no further description is here required and no claim is made to them. The binder or movable jaw D, it will be observed, passes around the cross-head in the direction of its length, working into guides formed in said cross-head; thence it is bent in a direction parallel with the length of the cross-head to the socket B; and the ends of said binder are next coiled in the form of a spiral spring, F, fitting around said socket and the handle C. The handle is reduced somewhat in size at one end, forming a shoulder, c. Onto this reduced end is fitted a collar, b, so that it may freely revolve thereon between the shoulder c and the lower edge of the socket B of the cross-head, when said handle is fitted into said socket, thus confining said collar in place. The collar b is of peculiar construction, being cast or otherwise formed with two thumb-ears, d d, by which it may be revolved, and also with two lesser projections or ears, e e, placed at or nearly at right angles to the iirstmentioned ears d d, so that when the collar b is revolved the projections e e will pass betweeneach coil of the spirally-bent extremities of the binder or movable jaw l), and in this way force said binder up and down as the collar bis turned to the right or left, bringing it more or less in contact with the cross-head or fixed jaw A.
From the foregoing it must be seen that I construct a mop-head cheaply and strongly, and obviate the necessity of attaching several parts heretofore found necessary in mopheads, besides reducing the cost by doing away with much riveting, and other fitting and manipulation, and since mop-heads are a common, though useful article of manufacture, the cheaper they can be made, (providing said cheapness is combined with excellence,) the better are the wants of the public subserved; hence my improvements are useful, novel, and cheap.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, an d desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The binder D, formed at one end into the spiral j' embracing the handle C, in combination with the collar b having lugs e e and ears d cl, substantially as set forth, for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of the collar b, formed with lugs e e and ears d d, with the binder D having a spiral, f, when arranged to operate in connection with the cross-head and handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
LUKE W. TAYLOR.
