IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICINAL BEVERAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,942, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASHER S. TAYLOR, of San Francisco, California, have invented or discovered a new and Improved Medicine or Medicinal Beverage, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, and the manner of compounding.
The object of my invention is to provide an. improved medicine or medicinal beverage either for family use or to be employed as a drink; and it consists in charging bitters, which are compounded of spirituous liquors, with carbonic-acid gas.
To make my beverage I take any of the recipes in ordinary use and compound bitters, using any spirits or spirituous liquors, such as rum, gin, whisky, or brandy as a base, making the proper infusion of herbs and extracts to give the bitters their distinctive flavor. I then form carbonicacid gas in any convenient manner or by any known and suitable method, so as to introduce it to the bitters under pressure. The bottles may then be corked or the beverage may be put up in that class of receivers which permits a certain amount to be drawn off as it is wanted without disturbing the remainder.
In this manner I am enabled to intimately combine the exhilarating properties of the carbonicacid gas with the tonic or medicinal qualities of the hitters without the necessity of using separate compounds.
The introduction of this gas has also the effect of mellowing or aging the liquor or spirit employed, thus destroying the disagreeable harshness which makes most bitter-s so distasteful.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is A medicinal beverage, compounded substantially as herein described.
