ATTACHMENT FOR JARS.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led January 8, 1915. Serial No. 1,104.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN J. VVOMPEY, a citizen of the United States,residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for `This invention relates to attachments for jars,and its object resides in the provision of a device of simple construction which may be readily secured at the mouth of a jar to provide means for the attachment of a cover or other article. l
The device also serves to protect the neck of the jar against breakage, and itspeculiar construction permits of its being applied to jars, the necks of which are of irregular or non-cylindrical form and of varying dimensions.
`While my invention may be applied to jars -or other wide mouthed vessels of any character, .it is particularly .adapted for use on fruit and preserving jars and moreA espe cially on the fountains.
When my attachment is employed onj ars of the type last-mentioned, it provides a syrup containers used in soda convenient medium for supporting and securing the pump which is'usually used in connection with the jars for raising the liquid contained therein.

the numeral 2 designates a jar the mouth lof which is surrounded Vby a short cylindrical neck 3. In the majority of jars ofthe type used on soda fountains, this neck has an indentation as shown at 4 in Fig. 3, which I employ for more firmly securing the attachment in place, as will hereinafter be described-.1 Inthis connection I wish it understood, however, that the indentation is not essential for the purpose mentioned and that my attachment may be applied equally well to jars the necks of which are not indented.
My attachment consists of two cooperative annularv members 5-and 6 Vone of which is of channel section to be placed over and around the neck of a jar and the other one of-which is of angle section to provide substantially rectangularly disposed flanges v7 and 8 which as shown in Fig. 6, to reduce its diameter for the purpose of permitting its passage through the mouth of the jar; The other member' 5 is provided with suitable means for fastening the pump, cover or other article, to be applied to the jar.
In the form illustrated in'Figs. 1 and 2, the yfastening means abovexreferred toconsists of a pair of oppositel7 disposed headed buttons 9 which serve to secure a flange-cover 10. upon the upper surfaces of the outer member 5 of the attachment. rIhe cover is to this end provided with a pair of elongate openings 12 which are formed for the passsage of the heads of the buttons at one of their ends, and to receive the shanks ofthe same attheir opposite ends. The cover 10 constitutes the base of a syrup pump 13 which is suspended in the jar. 1
To apply the attachment to the jar, its exterior or female member is positioned over the neck of the vessel and its interior or male member is inserted through the mouth of the'v same and. then turned until its .fiange 8 ts around' the inner flange of the outer ber of the attachment is likewise indented as at 15 in Fig. 4l, and when the` member is placed on the jar it is positioned so that its indentation registers with that of the neck 3.
After the members have been secured in the manner hereinbefore explained, the two registering notches or indentations are filled with solder as indicated in black at 16 in Figs. 1 and 2.
To more firmly secure the attachment to the jar, a coating of cement or other adhesive may be applied at the inner surface of the female member as shown at 17 in the drawings, so that after the parts are pressed together it will rigidly adhere to the outer edge of the neck of the jar.
In the form shown in Fig. 7, the flanged cover is attached to the female member of the attachment by mea-ns of a hinge joint 18, and in the construction illustrated in Fig. 8, the outer flange of the member is provided with a screw bead 21 for the application of a correspondingly beaded cover 20.
In the use of syrup ars of soda fountains, the bases of theirV pumps are ordinarily loosely supported upon the necks of the same and it will thus be observed that my invention not only provides means for preventing breakage of the necks of the jars by contact with the metallic parts of the pump and adjacent portions of the fountain, but that it will furthermore make it possible to lift the jars by means of the pumps on account of the rigid connection between the covers 10 to which the pumps are secured, and the outer members 5 of the attachments.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. An attachment of the character described comprising a member having an annular recess adapted to receive the neck of a jar, and a member having a flange adapted to engage a shoulder within the jar opposite to the edge of the neck of the same, the said members fitting snugly one within the other.
2. An attachment of the character described comprising a member having an annular recess adapted to receive the neck of a jar, and a member having a flange adapted to engage a shoulder within the jar oppo* site to the edge of the neck of the same, the said members being slidably fitted one within the other.
3. An attachment of the character described comprising a member having an annular recess, and a member composed of a ring adapted to engage the inner circular surface of said recess, and having at its lower edge, an outwardly projecting flange.
4. An attachment of the character described comprising a member having an annular recess, and means for the attachment of a cover, and a member composed of a ring adapted to engage the inner circular surface of said recess, and having at its lower edge, an outwardly projecting flange.
5. An attachment of the character described comprising a member having an annular recess, a cover movably attached to said member, and a member composed of a ring adapted to engage the inner circular surface of said recess, and having at its lower edge, an outwardly projecting flange.
6. The combination with a jar, of a protective covering` composed of two coperative members which are slidably fitted one within the other, and which engage respectively the edge of the neck of said jar, and a shoulder within the jar opposite to the said edge.
7. The combination with a jar, of a protective covering composed of two coperative members which are slidably tted one within the other, and which engage respectively the edge of the neck of said jar, and a shoulder within the jar opposite to the said edge, one of said members having means for the attachment of a cover.
8. The combination with a jar,`of a protective covering inclosing the neck of the jar and composed of two cooperative members which are slidably fitted one within the other, and which engage respectively the edge of the neck of said jar, and a shoulder within the jar opposite to the said edge.
9. The combination with a jar, of a protective covering composed of two coperative members which are slidably fitted one within the other, and which engage respectively the edge of the neck of said jar, and a shoulder within the jar opposite to the said edge, the said covering and the saidv jar having registering openings to receive a plastic material for holding the one in its position with relation to the other.
s10. An attachment of the character described comprising a member having an annular recess, and a member composed of a ring adapted to engage the inner circular surface of said recess, and having at its lower edge, an outwardly projecting liange having a portion of reduced diameter.
11.
