Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IRVING A. HOWE, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,885, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVING A. HOW'E, of Boston, in the county of Sutlolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Drawers, Snc.; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawing which accompanies and forms part of this specication, is a description of my invention, suflcient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
In making drawers it is customary to make the legs separate, joining them together at the seat or body by a central seam. This seam not only causes an unpleasant and troublesome tightness at the crotch, so that the strain tends to impede free movement of the legs, but the seam itself is a source of irritation to many persons.
To obviate this defective construction I make such a garment with an inserted piece or gusset between the legs, said gusset being preferably ci' lozen ge-shape, and, being whole or unseamed at its center, by its position and rela-tion to the leg part on each side of it, it insures perfect freedom ot' movement ofthe legs, the fullness effected by it rendering it impossible, under any possible movement of the legs, that the cloth between them can be tightened or brought .under strain.
It is in a pair of drawers having a whole or unseamed gusset-piece inserted between the legs at the crotch, and imparting a fullness to the garment at this point, and lapped and protected in part by the ily-pieces, that my improvement consists.
The drawing represents the upper or crotch part of a pair of drawers embodying the improve ment.
a b denote the two legs; c, the upper part or body; d, the opening or ny; e, the gusset-piece; and j' g, the two fly-pieces which lap the upper or front point of the gusset-piece c, serving to strengthen and protect it.
It will thus be seen that the strength will be given just where it is most needed, and the fullness, without any middle seam, just where it is needed; and there cannot, under any conditions, be any strain upon the gore or gusset, which never becomes distended or strained during wear.
' I lay no claim to elastic or perforated gorcs of' any kind, but
I claim- The described improvement in drawers, consisting in forming them with the full unseamed piece or gusset e inserted and located as shown and set forth, the point of the gusset being protected by the iiy-piccesf g lapping thereon.
IRVING A. HOWE.
