CHILL FOR MOLDBOARDS OR OTHER CASTINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
Application filed. January 29, 1915. Serial No. 5,145. 1
1'0 (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM T. HUTCHI- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chills for Moldboards or other Castings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in chills for mold-boards or other castings and has for its object to provide a very simply constructed and easily operated chill.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined cope and chill'the upper wall of the chill forming a portion of the cope.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved method of forming the opposing walls of a chill water box.
With the above and other objects in view, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of my improved chill. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of a chill board Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the device, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line AA Fig. 4 the stand being removed and the sand being partially broken away.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the specification and in the several views in the drawings in which-- 1 indicates my invention which consists of a stand 2 supporting an inclined chill 3 and having a short side 4 and a relatively tall side 5, upon which the rear and forward parts of the chill seat. The hinge members 8 and 9 of the cope or flask 1O engage hinge members 6 and 7 on the chill member 11.
The chill member 11 consists of a bottom plate 12 which is provided with a recess 13, and a chill board or plate 14 upon which a pattern 15 is adapted to seat and which conforms in its upper surface contour and outline to the shape of the casting to be made thereon. The plate 12 is provided with upturned edges 16 which surround the chill board or plate 1% and lie flush with the wall of the cope or flask and form a rest for the cope or flask when the latter is swung to operative position with relation to the chill member 11.
The plate 12 has a groove 17 extending en tirely around the recess 13 and the plate 11 is provided with a boss 18 having a groove 19 extending therearound inwardly of its edge and conforming to the groove 17 Between the grooves 17 and 19 seats a gasket 20 which is held compressed between the two plates by means of the bolts 21 which hold the chill plate 1 1 and bottom plates 12 together, whereby a steam and water tight chamber 22 is formed. Steam or hot water to heat the plate 14 is admitted through the pipe 23. A hook 2 1 on the cope engages the pin 25 on the chill member 11.
26 and 27 are upstanding flanges on the upper surfaces of the chill board 1% to form a stop for the pattern 15 and the casting.
Having now described my invention that which I claim tobe new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: r
1. The described device consisting of a chill having an upper and lower wall said lower wall having a recess whereby a steam chamber is formed, certain edges of said lower wall being turned up to extend flush with the upper surface of said upper plate.
2. The described device consisting of a chill having an upper and lower wall said lower wall having a recess whereby a steam chamber is formed, certain edges of said lower wall being turned up to extend flush with the upper surface of said upper wall, said walls having opposing grooves a gasket interposed between said grooves and means for forcing said plates together upon said gasket.
3. The described device consisting of a chill having an upper and lower wall said lower wall having a recess whereby a steam chamber is formed, certain edges of said lower wall being turned up to extend flush with upper surface of said upper wall, said walls having opposing grooves a gasket interposed between said grooves and means for forcing said plates together upon said gasket, and an inlet port in said bottom' wall.
1. The described device consisting of a chill having an upper and lower wall said lower wall having a recess whereby a steam chamber is formed, certain edges of said lower wall being turned up to extend flush with upper surface of said upper wall, said walls having opposing grooves a gasket interposed between said grooves and means for'forcing said plates together upon said gasket an inlet port in said bottom wall, a stand for said chill.
5. The described device consisting of a chill having an upper wall and lower wall said lower wall having a recess whereby a steam chamber is formed, certain edges of said lower wall being turned up to extend flush with the upper surface of said upper wall, said walls having opposing grooves, a gasket interposed between said grooves and means for forcing said plates together upon said gasket, an'inlet port in said bottom wall, a stand for said. chill, and a cope hinged to said chill.
8. The described device consisting of a chill having an upper wall and lower wall said lower wall having a recess whereby a steam chamber is formed, certain edges of said lower wall being turned up to extend flush with the upper surface of said upper wall, said walls having opposing grooves, a gasket interposed between said grooves and means for forcing said plates together upon said gasket, an inlet port in said bottom wall, a stand for said chill, and a cope Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
hinged to said chill, said chill having and chill having an upper and lower wall and a water box formed therebetween, certain" edges of said lower wall being turned to extend flush-with the upper surface. of
said upper wall, said walls having opposing grooves, a gasket interposed between said grooves, and means for forcing said plates Y together upon said gasket, the upper surface of said upper wall being inclined and having stops thereon to engage a pattern, said upper and lower walls being hingedly connected.
In testimony whereofl a'tfixiny signature in presence of two witnesses.
