UNITED STATES ALFRED E. JONES, OF NEWARK, ASSIGNOR TO SPAULDING, J ENN INGrS & (10.,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF WEST BERGEN, NEW JERSEY.
MOLD FOR COMPOUND INGOTS.
SPECIFICATION forming" part of Letters Patent No. 240,727, dated April 26, 1881.
application filed December 17, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it 'known that I, ALFRED E. JONES, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Molds for Compound Metal lngots,of which the following is a specification.
Moldshave been made in two or more parts for the reception of cast metal. In some instances one portion of the mold has been removed and another substituted, so as to leave the necessary space into which steel or other metal can be cast directly upon the iron. It is difficult to thus exchange parts of the molds while hot. In other instances a wedge-shaped filling-plate has been placed in the mold at one side, and the same has been withdrawn after the iron has been cast; but the space left for the steel is not parallel, and hence one part is thicker than the other, and owing to the unequal expansion of the metal-mold the said wedge is difficult to withdraw, and sometimes it becomes immovable.
Myinvention is made for avoiding the aforesaid difficulties; and it consists in combining with the mold a peculiar hinged cover, that can be easily opened on closed, and a removable plate at the inside of thccover, so that after the iron has been cast into the mold the cover or side may be swung open sufficiently to remove the pressure upon the inclosed plate, and then the plate removed and the cover or side replaced, and the steel cast into the parallel space that is thus left in the mold.
111 the drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of the mold complete and ready for use. Fig. 2 represents the same as open for the removal of the plate. Fig.3 is a section at the line a: a", and Fig. 4 is an edge view of the removable plate.
The mold is made with the three sides a, b, and c and bottom deitherin one piece or firmly connected together. The foot or base of the mold extends, as at e, to form a hinge or hearing for the movable side or cover f to swing upon.
This cover is made with a recess for the recep- 5 tion of the movable plate g, and the edges of the coverf set closely against the edges of the mold. The lower part of the cover has a projection, 'i, that sets into the bearing 6, forming with it an open hinge for the cover to swing upon.
it is to be understood that the mold is closed and held by the movable ring I, and the plate g is in the cover. The iron is cast into the mold,
and assoon as it is sutficiently consolidated the ring l is lifted, the cover f swung "back, and the plate 9 removed, and then the mold is closed again and the steel poured into the space previously occupied by the plate 9, so that the two metals weld together. 9 should be provided with a hoolti k, at the upper end, to sustain the plate in its proper position relatively tothe cover.
The removable plate is to be parallel; but
the same may be of anydesired shape sectionally to form a bar or plate corresponding to the steel or other metal cast into the mold.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the mold a I) c d, of
a swinging cover,f, and the removable plateg,
of the mold, which plate is liberated'byopen- 8oing the mold, and is removed after one metal has been cast, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 11th dayof December, A. D. 1880.
ALFRED E. JONES. Witnesses:
