UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID H. NATION, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR MAKING STOVE-DOOR CATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,005, dated August 26,1879; application filed July 7, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID H. NATION, of St. Louis city, and in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Making Stove-Door Catches and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, refer-. ence being bad to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my. invention consists in an improved device for making catches for stovedoors or other castings, the object being to lessen the cost of construction of the stove or other castings, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
' the device is made separate from the pattern,
for the convenience of manufacture, and riveted onto the iron pattern, a projection on the de-.
vice being made to set through a mortise in the pattern, so as to be operated from the back of the pattern or plate during. the process of molding.
A represents the pattern, having a suitable mortise through the same. The device consists of a plate, B, with projection to on the back to fit in the mortise in the pattern. From the front of the plate B projects the shell or standard U. D is the catch, and b a spiral spring. The hinged part orcatch D is hinged between the projections 01, which are covered by the sides 00 of the mortise in the patternA,
thereby preventing the pin 01 of the hinge from coming out or working loose.
The shell or standard 0 is for the purpose of giving form and holding the mold or sand in position while operating the catch.
Instead of having the shell with covered sides, it may be made in skeleton form.
The operation of this device is as follows: It is molded up in the sand in the way of ordinary castings, and beforethe pattern is drawn from the mold the catch D is raised on its hinge, so as to clear the core formed at w, the spiral spring b keeping it in position and preventing its wearing loose, and while in this raised position the pattern, of which the machine forms a part, is drawn from the mold or sand, thus forming the core or catch in the mold.
I am thus enabled to form a perfect catch in the mold with little labor, thereby lessening the, cost of construction, as such catches are usually cut with a file at great expense in handling and labor.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the shell 0, catch D, and spring b, for the purposes set forth.
2. The pattern provided with a mortise,'in
combination with the device B C D, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of June, 1879.
DAVID H. NATION.
