Description

JAMES OLIVER, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT'IN CHILLS FOR CASTING MGLD-BQARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lli, dated March 3, i874; application iled February 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .Lunas OLIVER, or South Bend, in the county ot' St. Joseph and State ot' Indiana, haveinvented certain new. and useful Improvements in Ohills for Casting Mold-Boards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereot', that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, which form a part ot'- this specilication, in which- Figure 1 represents a top view of the cope and water-chamber. Fig. 2 represents a bottom view 'ot' the cope and chill. Fig. 3 represents a section through the line .v0 x, Fig. 2.
This invention is an improvement on patent granted to me May 2, 1871, in which a pan or chamber is provided, forming a part of the chill, said chill being provided with grooves or creases on its face to conduct away the steam and gas arising from the het metal coming in contact with the sand and chill, thus allowing the flask to remain in a horizontal position during the cperation of casting, while the pan or chamber is filled with and retains the hot water, and it consists in the construction of the pan or chamber, tl1e--bottom of which forms the chill, providing the same with arms, the outer ends of which have a suitable shape or form, in order to be attached to the frame of the cope, so that the chill and pan or chamber are rigidly connected to the cope, and at the same time an open space is left in the top ot' the cope, extending to the bottom ot' the drag between the outside of the pan or chamber and the frame of the cope, thus allowing the sand to be rammed from the top of thecope,
and providing a convenience in forming the opening through which the molten metal is poured into the mold. I
A represents the pan or not-water chamber, having a shape corres''ionding with the outline of the mold-board, and the under side ofthe bottom ot' said pau forms the chill, the back of which is provided with grooves to allow the steam and gas to pass ott' when casting, and also provided with pertorations cfor the insertion ot' the dies d, which form the bolt-holes in the cast chilled mold-board- Extending out ward from the pan A, and cast thereon, are arms clgthe outer ends b ot which are of suitable form to t the cope-frame B, and be secured thereto by screws or bolts, thus holding the pan rigid with the cope-frame, and leaving' the open sandspaee O between the outside ot' the pan and cope-frame, allowing the sand to be rammed from the top, and allowingthe open ing I) to be made in any convenient place. The opening D communicates with the gate e, through which the molten metal is poured into the mold. The opening D and gate e are formed in the sand O. E represents the pattern resting on the face ot' the chill, which is made in the form of the mold-board to be cast. F represents the drag of the usual construetion, the space O being filled with sand.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The open pan A, the bottom of which forms the chill, provided with arms a, in combination with the copefraine B, substantially'as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the toregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
Witnessesz JAB'IES OLIVER.
