Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN COY, OF OSWEGO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CASTING DRAIN-TILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,643, dated May 10, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN OoY, of Oswego, i'i the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented aeertain new and useful Improvement in the Method of (lasting Drain- Tiles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the lnold which I employ for casting tiles. Fig. 2 is a similar view ot' the same with half the outer case removed to show the core. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the mold.
The same part is marked by the same letter of reference in all the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in an improved method of casting drain-tiles from a composition consisting of coal-tar and sand. I do not claim to be the inventor of this composition, which has already been patented by another, but tiles made of this composition are now cast in molds made in sand from wooden patterns in the usual way of casting articles from iron. This involves great labor and expense compared with my method, which consists in casting this composition in iron molds made like that represented in the drawings, said molds being i'reely lubricated with a suitable composition to prevent the adhesion of the tiles to their inner surface.
To enable others skilled inthe art to make use of my improved method, I will proceed to describe it and the means I use for carrying it into execution.
lEhe drawings represent a mold of castiron made of the proper form to give the required shape to the tile. Its outer shell or flask is made in two parts, A and A', which aie joined together by a hinge, a, on one siie and keyed together on the other, when tl e mold is shut. A core, consisting ot' thrte pieces, B O D, is inserted in the interior cf the flask, and a space, b, is left between the core and tlask of the size and shape of the tile to be cast. A spout, E, serves for the reception of the soft and heated composition. The mold thus formed is thoroughly coated on its interior surface with a composition of solt soap and sand, or tallow and sand, or clay and tallow, and the boiling composition of' sand and coal-tar is then poured in. The mold is then cooled by iminersing it in cold Water, and when suciently cool it is opened and the completed tile withdrawn. The mold may then again be closed and the operation repeated. This method is much more expeditious than the comlnon one, and also more economical, as
there is a saving of at least one-t-hird of the labor.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Oasting draintiles from a mixture of coaltar and sand in an iron mold, substantially such as herein described, coated on its inner surface with a composition of soft-soap and sand, tallow and sand, or clay and tallow, in the manner specitied.
The above specification of my said invention signed and witnessed, at Oswego, this 29th day of February, A. D. 1864.
