Description
STATES Unire .WENT Eric GEORGE NIMMO, OE JERSEY CITY, NET/V JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOLDS FOR CASTING STEEL TIRES.
To @ZZ whom, it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, GEORGE NIMMO, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful y Improvement in Molds for Casting Steel Tires;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal elevation, the cover being removed; Fig. 2, a section of Fig. l at L; Fig. 3, a side section of the gate. Fig. 4, plan of gate at K.
llhe difficulty of casting steel in molds is to procure a substance that will resist the intense heat where the met-al runs while being' illed.
The nature of my invention cons'sts in coating the inside of the mold with the following substance: I procure plumbago crucibles which have become useless -i'or steel-melting, and having selected the pieces as pure as possible grind them. Then add more sand and clay, if necessary, and mix with water to a proper' consistency.
I do not confine myself to the use of old crucibles,as the new material may be taken before being used for such; but for economy I use the old. Nor do I confine myself to the use of plumb-ago mixture for this mold, as I have previously used it successfully in other molds for steel-casting- To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the outside and bottom piece with the guide-pieces D in one casting; B, the inside piece of wrought-iron with knobs J attached to hold the coating, and shown in elevation at Fig. 2, said inside piece being parted at E in Fig. 1. f
C is the cover, and being circular is clamped in the usualmanner.
G is the gate in two parts, M and E, Fig. 3,' M being fixed to outside piece, A, at K by bolts I, E being movable and clamped to M as in plan, Eig. 4.
Having coated the parts shown black, it is then dried and piece B put in its place, a wedge inserted at F, and the space illed with coating to complete the circle. The piece E is then put ou aud clamped to M, the cover C clamped on top ofthe Whole. and on being elevated is ready for the metal.
To allow the tire to shrink in cooling, the cover is removed, the wedge withdrawn, and the coating broken, when the piece B may be contracted.
I therefore claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I. The piece B, with knobs J, to hold the Vheat-resisting substance, operated in the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. The gate G, attached to A in the manner and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE NIMIWIO.
