IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,740, dated August 8, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM CLAGK, of Prairie du Chien, inthe county ofOi-awford and State of Wisconsin, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Vashing-lvlachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciiication, in which- Figure lis a side view of my improved machine. A are the shafts or thills, the rear parts of which are connected and held in their proper relative positions by cross-bars a, and to which is securely attached the axle B, upon the journals of which the wheels C revolve. The axle Bis bent twice at right angles near each journal, as shown in Fig. 3, to enable it to pass beneath the box D. The box D, into which the clothes are placed, is made in the form of a hollow cylinder, and rests upon the thills A between the cross-bars a. The box D is detachably connected with the thills A at its forward side, so that its rear side may be raised to throw the operating mechanism out of gear. The box D is made in two parts, the plane of division being at or near the center. The two parts ofthe box D are hinged to each other at their forward edges, and are secured to each other at their rear edges by a hasp and staple or other convenient fast ening. The box D should be made of or lined with such a material as will make it perfectly water-tight. To the inner end of the hub of one of the wheels C is secured a gear-wheel, E, into the teeth of which mesh the teeth of a small gear-wheel, F, attached to the projecting end of the journal of the roller G, the journals of which revolve in bearings attached to the upper edge of the ends ofthe lower part of the box D. The journals .of the roller G also pass through the uprights H attached tothe inner sides ofthe ends of the lower part of the box D. In the bearings in the upper parts of the uprights H revolve the journals of the upper roller I. The bearings of the journals of the upper roller Iare l held down by rubber' or equivalent springs, so

that the said upper roller may yield to accommodate itself to the varying thicknesses of the clothes passing between the rollers, while all the time bearing upon said clothes with sufficient pressure to force out the water. The rollers G I may be both smooth or both corrugated, or one smooth and the other' corrugated, as may be desired, and they may be made of rubber or other suitable material. J is a double netting, which passes between the rollers G I and around the guide-rollers K, pivoted to the ends of the lower part of the box D in front and rear of the lower roller G, so that the netting J may be kept spread out, and so that its lower part may pass loosely through the water in the lower part of the box D, allowing the clothes in said netting to become thoroughly saturated. The double netting J is made in sections and open at one edge, thus forming pouches to receive the clothes. In one end ofthe lower part of the box D near its lower edge is formed a hole closed with a plug or other stopper, through which the water may be drawn off when desired, and the water pressed out of the clothes by the rollers G without removing them from the netting J L is a lever, the rear end of which is pivoted te the rear part of the end of the box D. The lever L is pivoted to a stud, M, attached to the rear part of one of the thills A, and its forward end projects into such a position that it may be conveniently reached and operated by the driver from the seat N at` tached to the forward side of the upper part of the box D. By this construction, by pressing the forward end of the lever L downward the rear part of the box D will be raised by throwing the gear-wheel F out of gear with the gear-wheel E and stopping the operating parts of the machine. The forward part of the lever L moves up and down along the inner side 0f the bar or upright O, the lower end of which is attached to the thill A, and the inner side of which has two notches formed in it to receive the lever L and hold it securely in either position.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The cylindrical box D with its mechanism, constructed as herein shown and described, to adapt it for attachment to the frame of a cart, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
