PEN OR PENCIL POCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1916.
Application filed July 8, 1914. Serial No. 849,746.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTON F. SKAREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crookston, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful.
Improvements in Pen or Pencil Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pen or pencil pockets and the object of the invention 1s to provide a simple and efiicient device which may be conveniently attached to the breast pocket of a vest or coat andwhich will effectively hold against accidental displacement a number of pens, pencils and l1ke articles.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a vest showing my invention applied to the pocket opening thereof in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the inner side of a portion of the vest, parts being broken away to disclose the pocket construction, in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents an outer garment such as a vest, coat or the like having a pocket opening 2 formed therein. Stitched to the inner side of the garment and communicating with the pocket opening are separate pieces of material 3 and 4E covered by the lining which has been partially broken away in Fig. 2 to better show the pocket, The lower ends of these pieces are stitched together and to the garment as shown at 5 and suit able pockets 6 are formed by running longitudinal rows of stitches 7 which extend down to a point adjacent the bottom edge of the pieces 3 and 4 and then upwardly on converging lines as shown so as to provide graduated pockets which taper from their entrance to their bottoms so as to provide openings in which the pens or pencils may be wedged to prevent their displacement.
It will be noticed that in forming the pockets the stitching 7 is continuous from one side of the pocket to the other being run down upon one side of the pocket and up on the other side thereof then down on the side of the adjacent pocket, leaving a wedge-shaped space 8 between each pocket or compartment.
What is claimed is A device of the kind described comprising a vest body, said vest body being formed with a pocket slit, a pocket consisting of two pieces of material, a continuous line of stitching securing together the pieces of material of said pocket, said line of stitching being divided into a series of longitudinally separated lines of stitches arranged in pairs converging towardthe lower ends of said pocket and connected by transverse stitches, the adjacent longitudinal lines of stitching meeting at a point at the upper end of said pocket, said pairs of longitudinal lines of stitches forming pencil pockets opening into said slit and having, mouths of varying widths, said pockets being stitched transversely upon the inner side of said vest body at its upper and lower ends whereby to be distendable freely along its main length.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANTON F. SKAREN.
