HELENE V. A. LORING, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PORTABLE DRESSING-CABINET.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, HELENE V. A. LoRINe, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Dressing-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to portable dressing cabinets designed for use especially by travelers-in containing the wardrobe and dressing case or toilet articles of a woman in traveling.
The object of my invention is the production of a device as mentioned which will be 7 of durable and economical construction and efiicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the combinations and, arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portable dressing cabinet embodying my invention, the same being shown in closed position, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cabinet in open or unfolded position, Fig.
.3 is a fragmentary section taken on substantially line w-m of Fig. 1, and Fig. 1 is a fragmentary detail section taken on line of Fig. 3.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated inthe drawing comprises a cabinet rectangular in form which presents somewhat the appearance of a trunk. Said cabinet consists of a lower body part 1 in which are mounted drawers 2 adapted for forward sliding. The front ends of said drawers are equipped with handles 3 for facilitating operation thereof. In order to securely connect the drawers with the member 1 in which the same are mounted so as to securely support the inner ends of said drawers when the same are drawn outwardly as shown in case of the uppermost drawer 2 in Fig. 2, the inner end of each drawer may be provided with laterally projecting studs 4 which slidably engage elongatedslots 5 provided at the inner side of each drawer compartment, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1916.
Application filed June 11, 1914. Serial No. 844,461.
The drawers 2 are held in closed position that is at their inner terminals of movement in'the cabinet member 1 by means of leaves 6 which are hingedly connected withsaid cabinet member at 7 The leaves 6, when in position to coiiperate with the drawers 2 as mentioned, are positioned at the front side of the cabinet member 1 with the free ends of said leaves overlapping, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, it being clear that with said leaves thuspositioned, access to the drawers 2 is prevented. Suitable locks 8 and 9 cooperate with the leaves 6 for securing the same in this position.
Arranged at the upper side of the cabinet part 1 is an upper cabinet part 10 swinginglv connected to the former by hinges 11. Slidably mounted in the part 10 are drawers 12, the arrangement being such that said drawerswill be accessible for forward sliding only when the member 10 is in upwardly rocked position as shown in Fig. 2. YVhen said member 10 is in downwardly rocked orfolded position as shown in Fig. 1 it will be seen that the outer ends of the drawers 12 are positioned against the upper side of the cabinet part 1, being therefore, in this position of the member 10, inaccessible. Suitable handles 13 are provided at the front ends of drawers 12 and suitable locks 14 cotiperatewith said drawers to secure the same in closed position.
The cabinet part 10 is supported in upwardlyrocked or unfolded position as shown in-Fig. 2 by means of the leaves 6, the latter, in the unfolding of the cabinet, being swung laterally and rearwardly to a position in which the upper edges thereof may be engaged by strips 15 provided at the rearward end of cabinet part 10 as will be readily understood. The leaves 6 thus serve in one position as means of locking the drawers 2 in closed position and in another position, as a means of supporting the cabinet part 10 in unfolded position. The cabinet part 10 is releasably locked in folded position by means of a suitable lock 16 oooperating therewith.
A cabinet of the construction set forth may be readily and easily folded or unfolded and will afford convenience to the user, it being clear that, with this arrangement, the belongings of the user contained in the cabinet are readily accessible, and the cabinet in addition to serving the usual function of an ordinary trunk namely that of a storage receptacle, being adapted also to serve as a dressing stand or cabinet.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eifect, this is capable of variation and modification'without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the class described comprising a body part having forwardly sliding drawers therein; leaves swingingly connected with said body adapted to hold said drawers in closed position in said body, said leaves being adapted to be swung outwardly and rearwardly to release said drawers; and an upper part connected with said bodyfor upward swinging, said leaves, when in outwardly and rearwardly swung positions, being adapted to support said upper part in upwardly swung position substantially as described.
I 8. A device of the class described comprisinga lower cabinet part and an upper cabinet part, said parts being hingedly connected together so as -to permit of said upper part being swung upwardly, in which position of saidupper part access may be gained to'the interior thereof; and leaves hingedly Goplesoi this patent may be obtained for connected to said lower'part adapted when in one position to close said lower part, and adapted in anotherposition to support said upper part in upwardly swung position, substantially as described.
4. A device of the class described comprising a lower cabinet part and an upper cabi net part, said parts being hingedly connect.
ed together so as to permit of said upper part being swung upwardly, in which position of said upper part access may be gained to the interior thereof; and leaves hingedly connected with said lower partadapted in or one position to overlap at the front side of said lower part in order to close the same, if V said leaves being adapted to be swung laterally and rearwardly to a position extending rearwardly from said lower part to serve as a support for said upper partwhen in ed together so as to permit of said upper part being swung upwardly, in'which position of said upper part accessmay be gained to the interior thereof; leaves hingedlyconnected to said lowerpartadapted when in one position to close said lower part,-and adapted in another position to support said upper part in upwardly swung position; 7
7. means for locking said leaves in "a position in which the sameclose said} lower cabinet part; and means for locking said upper part in lowered scribed. 7
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. V HELENE V:. A. LORING. Witnesses: U a y JOSHUA R. H. Poms, JANET E. FARRELL;
