To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, PHILLIP PHANEUFF.

and HARRY GERHARD, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in. the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had therein to the accompanying drawlngs. l

This invention relates to a hat and hair holding device, and the primary object of our invention is to provide a hat with positive and reliable means, in a manner hereinafter set forth, for retaining the hat on the head of a wearer without using ordinary hat pins, which are injurious to a hat and hair, besides being dangerous when the pointed ends thereof protrude from the crown of the hat.

Another object of our invention is to furnish a hat with detachable holding means which can be easily and quickly adjusted to engage in and hold the hair at any I desired point, the means employed being practically invisible and such portions as are exposed being ornamental and neat in appearance. p

A further object of our invention is to provide a hat and hair holding device wherein the parts are constructed with a view of reducing the cost of manufacture and at the same time retain the features by which safety, durability, simplicity and ease of assembling are secured, and with such ends in view, our inventlon resides 1n the novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein 7 V In the drawing, 1 denotes a flexible band or strip having one end thereof provided with a guide 2 and a stud 3, while the opposite end is apertured, as at 4:, whereby after the apertured end is placed in theguide 2, oneof the apertures 4i will receive the stud 3 and thereby form a band that may be easily and quickly adjusted to fit within the crown 5 of a hat and on the headof a wearer. V Slidable on the band 1 are holders 6 havmg the upper ends thereof pronged, as at 7 and the lower ends formed with loops 8. The prongs 7 of the holders 6 are adapted to engage in the crown 5 of the hat, as shown n Figs. 1 and 4:, and prevent accidental displacement of the hat relative to said holders. The holders 6 have enlarged slotted portions 9 providing clearance for the band 1 and said holders can be easily shifted to engage the inner wall of the hat crown at any desired point.

Detachably suspended from the looped ends of the holders 6 are combs 10 having tines that are slightly bowed and adapted to enter the hair of the wearer when raised and pushed in the hair. Each comb has a central tine 11 provided with a pear shaped head 12 by which the comb is suspended from its holder. The head 12 is substantially flat in side elevation, as shown in Fig. 4 and canbe placed in the looped end 8 of the holder and turned a quarter of a revolutlon whereby the comb will be suspended from the holder. The tine 11 loosely fits in the looped end of a holder, and in consequence of this arrangement, the comb can be pushed upwardly to assume the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and all of the tines will cooperate in preventing accidental displacement of the device and the hat. Each comb may have an ornamental head, as shown in Fig. 2, or a hair holding head as shown in Fig. 3, such a head clamping the hair against the forehead to hold it as arranged. In either instance, the head of the comb has a pocket 18 .and prongs 14. The pockets 13 are adapted to receive the lower looped ends 8 of the holders 6, and the prongs 14 are adapted to engage in the crown of the hat, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. When'the comb is raised the head of the same renders the lower end of the holder invisible and by manipulating the comb or the hat, the prongs 14 can be easily placed in engagement with the hat, to cooperate with the prongs 7 of the holders in anchoring the device relative to the hat, while the combs at each side of the head cooperate in retaining'the device on the head and the appearance.

One embodiment of our invention has been illustrated but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications, as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What we claim is 1. The combination with a hat, of a band adapted to fit therein, holders on said band having prongs adapted to engage in said hat, and combs suspended from said holders and having prongs adapted to engage in said hat when said combs are elevated.
